Mangaluru/Udupi, May 25: Various educational organisations and trusts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have submitted proposals to start 14 private unaided PU colleges in Dakshina Kannada and four in Udupi districts. If the government accepts these proposals, 14 new PU colleges are likely to become functional from the academic year 2022-23.
Proposals to start 18 new PU colleges in Addooru, Surinje, Bajpe, Kinnigoli and Puttur of Dakshina Kannada and in Kaup, Katapadi and Vakwadi of Udupi district have been submitted. At present, there are 197 PU colleges in Dakshina Kannada and 105 PU colleges in Udupi. Of these 99 colleges are unaided institutions in Dakshina Kannada and 45 colleges are unaided in Udupi. Last year while approval was obtained for starting two degree colleges in Udupi, no college was opened in Dakshina Kannada.
Due to the higher pass percentage in the SSLC examinations this year, the demand for PUC seats has gone up in colleges as a result of which a proposal has been submitted to permit opening of new PU colleges.
For 2022-23, the government had invited applications from interested educational institutions and trusts to start permanently unaided PU colleges through the online mode. Applicants should have been registered with the authorised body without any pending court cases against them.
