Bangalore : Four Youths Drown in Bidadi Lake

Bangalore, Mar 3 (DHNS) : Three boys and a girl drowned while swimming in Nelligudde lake near Bidadi in the adjoining Ramanagara district on Wednesday, while six others who also took a dip, managed to escape from the swirling waters. 

The police said that a group of 11, including four boys and seven girls, left for Bidadi to visit a temple and unwind there. After visiting the temple, the group reached the lake and relaxed on its banks before the boys entered the water for a swim.

Soon the others joined in. Some of the boys and girls managed to swim to the middle of the lake when one of them started drowning. The police said three from the group swam frantically to rescue the boy, but they too drowned.

“They could not swim because the lake was deep at that point, which was the result of dredging a few years ago,” a police officer said.

Narrating the tragic incident, eyewitness Sharath, an SSLC student at St Joseph School, said: “We wanted to spend the Shivaratri holiday. So, the girls took the train and the boys took a bus to reach Bidadi. After a darshan of Anjaneya Swamy, we reached the lake by autorickshaws.”

Sharath said that Manoj, who was the oldest in the group, consumed liquor before entering the lake. Tragedy struck minutes later,” he said.

Claiming that the survivors tried to escape from the spot after their friends drowned, the police said the boys and girls had lied to their families about their visit to the temple.

“They instead went to the lake and then the drowning led them to flee,” a police source said, adding that autopsies on the bodies will reveal whether they had consumed alcohol.

A majority in the group was pursuing SSLC and PUC, but three of the girls worked at Tele Call Seva Centre.

    Here the issue is the cause for our youth going out of the way, risking their life and causing innumerable pain to their parents. By following the household laws [Garhapathya Sutras]and other laws laid down by our rushis and blending the same with modern values, we can build a strong society.

    I did not say that the Westerners have coverted themselves to Hinduism. Their no religious conversion in Hinduism. The westerners are accepting the Hindu/Indian way of life on their own by hearing to our yogis and studying our scriptures.

    In 19th century itself many western
    scholars have studied our Vedas and other scriptures and translated them into English. They are available in internet under the head "Sacred Texts of Hinduism". You can search them through Google.

    The correct name for Hinduism is Sanathana Dharma which does not limit itself to any religion but it encompasses all aspects of life like spirituality, science, politics, business and social structure.

    Your forefathers were also following Sanathana Dharma. Yesudas, though a christian by birth, follows Sanathana Dharma. Most of the Hindusthani Musicians were Brahmins [they stil quote their Gothras], but were converted due to various reasons. Great musicians like Amjad Ali Khan worship Goddess Saraswathi in their home.

    By respecting Sanathan Dharma we all will be respecting our great forefathers who have contributed immensely to the mankind.

    When the western world is accepting Hindusim it is a noble thing but when a catholic missionary is evangelising, it is ....???
    Height of Double Standard I say unless you are for true spirtied worship and free flow of spiritual beliefs in a secular country like India.

    Tragic accident that took away the lives of promising youth.

    It is shocking that at such a small age children are resorting to alcohol to get fun. Most of the incidents of drowning are the result of intoxication, throwing caution to the winds.

    As Mr. Dayananda has rightly pointed out that when the Western World is trying to emulate the Indian Vedic way of life we are trying to follow the Western world. All this is the result of early exposure to pleasurable things without knowing the consequences.

    May God grant eternal peace to the deceased and the strength and courage to the affected families to bear the loss and go ahead in life.

    Very unfortunate… this it seems was waiting to happen, although it should’ve been avoided. Just goes to show in the name of festivity, the immature youth is longing for such golden opportunities to cuddle and mingle around…in the pretext of outing…doesn’t matter even if that means consumption of liquor.

    Some vital questions :

    A police officer stated…“They could not swim because the lake was deep at that point, which was the result of dredging a few years ago.” If true, why wasn’t there a caution / warning board put up to warn these youths to stay-off? Whose negligence is this?

    Has / had there been such similar incident in the past? Nothing is mentioned about this. If indeed true, the authorities should have taken steps to avoid such a catastrophe. Given to understand from the lone snap clicked, this seems to be a lonely secluded place with hardly any habitat around.

    Why didn’t the parents of the deceased accompany their wards (they should’ve been suspicious enough) given the fact that they lied…this unfortunate incident could’ve been avoided?

    Any concrete action NOW being taken to avoid such recurrences… or we will continue to see precious lives being lost?

    The lucky ones should speak up … may be after they have regained their normality … since someday or the other, the truth will be revealed.

    May God grant repose to the departed souls and shower his grace and strength to the bereaved families.

    The money and indivisualism is spoiling our society. When we were young, village elders /locality citizens used to observe our movements and tell our family if we do any wrong. Now, such advises will be treated as intrusion in their family/personal affairs.

    The reason for these incidents is the disappearance of traditional values from the homes and text books. In the name of secularism our teachers cannot teach the qualities of Shri Rama in schools.

    When the western world is accepting our Hindu way of life, our young generation is taking alcohol and following the culture like Valentine Day - cultures discarded by the westerners.

    In the Vedic period, production of worthy citizens was one of the duties of the householders.

    Now, we should adopt both modern and traditional values in our homes as well as education to build a healthy atmosphere where our children will develop in all aspects of life.
