TN Museum of Possibilities for the Disabled turns into a major attraction


Chennai, Jun 8 (IANS): The Museum of Possibilities for the Disabled opened by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has turned into a major attraction for the specially abled and the common people alike.

There are several assistive and adaptive devices that help persons with disabilities at the Commissionerate for the Welfare of Differently Abled on the Lady Wellington Campus.

The museum is built on a domain-specific model with live, work, and play as major domains. It showcases various adaptations and technologies that will help people with all kinds of disabilities become independent. It showcases various items from a tactile geometry set and drawing tool, Braille Cube, alphabet plate, tactile wrist watch, tactile scrabble board with coins, talking bathroom scale, a signature guide to an adapted colour keyboard, appropriate paper-based technology (APT), standing crutches, pull down cloth hanger, adjustable backrest and various other adapted kitchen utensils and bathroom utilities.

M. Krishnamoorthy, whose son Deepak is a 21-year-old with disabilities, told IANS, "The Museum of Possibilities is a place that provides the necessary confidence to those with special abilities and I have brought my son over here. It's a huge relief for people like us who are worried about the future of our children."

"The museum aims to help people with disabilities participate in various events and could try new technologies and find if it works for them, he added."

The museum displays products made by disabled persons that visitors can buy and it also has a café run by six specially abled persons.

The museum also has a skill development centre and a dedicated space to encourage and promote employment opportunities for the specially abled.

Murugan. R told IANS, "I am a person with disabilities and the Museum of Possibilities is a place wherein we can get some help with employment and skill development opportunities."
