Bihar Parents Seek Mercy Killing for Two Sons

Muzaffarpur (Bihar), March 9 (IANS) Asha Devi is aware of the cruel irony. "Mothers seek long lives for their children, but here I am seeking death for my two sons," she says, slumped beside Nitin, 15, and Anshu, 13, who suffer from muscular dystrophy.

The rare muscular disorder is characterised by the death of muscle cells and tissue, and reduces its victims to skeleton-like shapes, with curved spines, progressive loss of body muscle and respiratory difficulties.

Nitin and Anshu cannot talk or stand on their feet. They are also paralysed below their chests and are unable to eat or move without assistance.

Asha says her sons were born healthy, but gradually started developing the condition when they were about two years old.
There is no cure for muscular dystrophy. Some advances have been made, but treatment is available only in the US, and costs anywhere upwards of Rs.30 lakh (Rs 3 million/about 60,000 USD).

The boys' father, Mukesh Kumar, speaks of this sum with an expression of helplessness.

A poor farmer in Ratwada village of Muzaffarpur district, some 70 km from Bihar capital Patna, he also runs a small shop to supplement his income, and manages to earn Rs.3,500-4,000 a month.

The sum is simply beyond his reach. That's why, he said, "I have asked the state
government to grant permission for my boys' mercy killing".

The plea comes at a time when the Aruna Shanbaug case is in the spotlight, with the Supreme Court rejecting mercy killing but giving support to the possibility of passive euthanasia for the nurse who has been in coma for 37 years.

"We have been pleading for their mercy killing because we cannot continue costly medical treatment, which anyway will not cure them, only prolong their unhappy lives. The state government should either grant permission or provide us help for treatment," he said.

"We cannot see our sons' pain and helplessness any more. Both are in utter discomfort," he said.

For Asha Devi, her children's condition is too much to bear.

"I cannot tolerate such a painful life for them. It is for the government to decide whether to grant permission for mercy killing or help us with their treatment," she said, her voice choking.

Mukesh said he sold off his little piece of land and the meagre valuables he had for his sons' medicines.

    Mr Shahnawaz

I don't see why you think their fate would have been different if these children were born in the middle east, the US I can understand but certainly not the middle east. I have studied cultures for donkeys years and can tell you with authority that these children would not have lived till they were teenagers if they were born in the middle east. Give up your false sense in pride in the primitive middle age cultures of the middle east. Take pride in your country and its greatest characteristics..Family values! Instead of thinking of ways to help these kids you are ranting away at your country. WOW!
May the supreme one bless the boys and their parents and stop their suffering

    Mr.Rakesh,
please come out of your narrow minded thinking.Open your eyes & try to understand the reality.

You can't comment & compare a person whom you dont know anything about.

Talking about these two unfortunate childrens' condition,Govt must sponsor fully the treatment cost. There should be no looking back at that.Life is precious.

I am eager to help the family in whatever ways possible.I request Daiji to provide the details for helping the family

Thanx Daiji for bringing the issue
    to the light

Mr. Rakesh sharma, don't you dare to compare Mother Theresa to other mothers who just care only their children where as it is their duty & responsibility to do so?

    Rakesh Sharma:
Your comparison of Mother Teresa is totally irrelevant to the subject. Instead of accusing some distant third parties totally unknown to you, why don’t you do something to contribute towards helping these suffering mothers who are IN NEED instead and kindly keep your idiotic views to yourself.

Do you comment sensibley? What is the Topic and for whom you are comparing?

Why you cant go and serve such people? It is self duty and obligation to look after thier own kids/siblings.

But for Mother Teresa-She chose Indians as her own children and looked after them, where as daily you and me overlook them while passing on the way.

    Mr. Rakesh,
Mother Theresa did not had her own 2 or 3 children to take care, she took care of countless kids ignored from their own parents and different types of diseased people from different places for so many years and she took care of others parents who forgot them as they grow. Mother Theresa did not asked any reward in return from any one that is the people who recognized her humble deed.Do you think u can take care of 5 or 10 sick peoples without the help of assistants for day and night.

Rajesh Sharma, please do not compare Mother Teresa with mothers who work for their own children. Utterly incomparable!! A mother can work for her own children, which every woman who gives birth to a child does but MOTHER TERESA laboured for Lepers and helpless people who were not her blood. THINK GUY,BEFORE YOU WRITE SOMETHING.

The mother of two sons is in no way comparable to anybody. The mental strain she is suffering with external efforts to look after simulteneously needs strong will power to be given by GOD alone. Now it is on the part of judge/CM to think twice as a human being and help parents on the plea.

In the cases of illness of this natute, the Central and state governments must step in and pay for the treatment of its citizens. Had these two children born in US or middle east, I am sure the government of these countries would have paid for their treatment. The government is collecting huge taxes from its citizens and not spending enough on health care. The money is stolen and hoarded in swiss bank accounts. I dont support mercy killing as it amounts to murder, but I regret that these two helpless boys are born in India. I feel media can do better in this regard and garner financial support from the general public.

    Mr Rakesh,

As for Mother Teresa, she was NOT given a JOB by anyone for social work. She chose this noble cause for herself because she wanted to help people whom you and I would not even go close to, let aside dedicating your entire life to serve them.. It is easier to take care of our own kin, mainly because it is our duty to care care of our kids, but to help someone who is not even related to you is divine.. I do feel for people who have to take care of disabled/mentally challenged kids and their plight is hard to bear... But comparing that to what Mother Teresa did for the millions of people who were unwanted by their own families is uncalled for!!
As for being fully equipped, she came to India with 5 rupees.. What she has accomplished with that is commendable and deserves more than a Nobel prize..

The story is very moving. It is causes such as these which needs backing of the people who are financially well-to-do. No parent would like to see children killed, it is only their utter helplessness that results this. My heart goes out to such sufferers.

I sometimes wonder these type of mother's are greater than 'Mother Teresa'..There are many mothers who are looking after there children's upto last who are mentally retarded/handicapped.. For these mother's no body ever give any Nobel Prize for there good cause..

In the case of 'Mother Teresa'..she was fully equipped with full force of nuns/assistants for 24 hours...at least she can sleep for good for eight hours without any disturbances.. But in this case of other mother's she is to keep her eyes open..every time with afraid children's will do untoward things one or another way..Mother Teresa is given her job to serve people thru social work...and called herself Mother Superior..

People who underwent..above such cases only knows how much pain they go thru..from so many years..
