Udupi, Mar 14: Uma Bharti, former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and former member of the BJP party, was in the district to visit the Sri Krishna Mutt here on Monday March 14.
Addressing mediapersons on the occasion, she expressed her willingness to join hands with Vishweshateertha Swamiji of Pejavar Mutt in the ongoing protest against the Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) power plant.
Clarifying that the move came about after a detailed discussion with Vishweshateertha Swamiji, she said that the latter had explained to her the harmful effects that the proposed power plant is likely to cause in the region.
Asserting that she was keen on 'fighting' for the cause of the state, she recalled the 2004 Hubli incident, over which she had been arrested and lost her chief ministership, and said that she would fight for the people with a similar zest in this case too.
She brushed aside the fact that the BJP government in the state is supporting the UPCL project, making it clear that it was not of any concern to her.
She refused to comment on the likelihood of her joining BJP anytime soon.
Pejavar Swamiji, who is currently in Hyderabad, would be returning to the district on Tuesday March 15, and will accompany Uma Bharti to the site of the project on the same day. Bharti will also address the grievances of the people regarding the project.
