Kundapur, Mar 17: Following in a series of thefts and burglaries including the one in which a wholesaler lost cigarette stock worth over Rs 20 lacs, which have shaken the faith of the citizens on the efficacy of the policemen, a person posing as a customer, succeeded in stealing gold ornaments worth about three lac rupees on Wednesday March 16.

The incident occurred in Gayatri Jewellers located in a commercial complex on Church Road here. A stranger, who approached  shop owner, Saligrama Ganesh Acharya, when Acharya was about to go home for lunch, bought a nose ring. He also enquired about rings, and paid advance amount for making a ring of a particular design. When the owner turned away to keep the tray of rings inside, the stranger picked up a box containing jewellery items, and vanished from the scene. About 160 grams of gold worth about three lac rupees was stolen in this way.

Acharya came to know about the missing of the box only after some time. He passed on information to other jewellers and the policemen. Finger print experts were rushed to the shop, and a few suspected persons were taken into custody for questioning. A case was registered in the local police station. Although the policemen had requested all the jewellery shops, after a number of jewellery thefts, to fix closed circuit cameras and employ security men in their shops, this shop had not conformed to these requirements.
