Mangalore : Spectacular Flower Show Begins in City

Mangalore, Mar 20 : The Dakshina Kannada district has received Rs 4 crore grant in the last four years under National Horticulture Mission (NHM) and financial assistance was given to about 25,000 farmers, said Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat.
Speaking at the annual flower show being organised by the Horticulture department in association with Zilla Panchayat and Siri at Kadri Park on Saturday, he said farmers will get Rs 40,000 assistance for one hectare land. Of which, 50 per cent will be in the form of financial assistance. The State government has given Rs 5,000 each to about 4,000 farmers in every taluk. A sum of Rs 1,000 crore has been earmarked for desilting of tanks for the irrigation purpose, he added.
To encourage gardening in city, parks should be developed in each ward of the Mangalore City Corporation limits. Every family can take up kitchen garden in and around their houses. The Horticulture department may undertake a new venture to honour best park and best kitchen garden at home.
Date extended
The two day flower show was supposed to conclude on Sunday. However, on the request of Bhat, the authorities decided to extend it till Tuesday.
The flower show enthralled the public with the World Cup model made of roses. Carvings on pumpkin with President of India, Yeddyurappa, Krishna Palemar too enthralled the public. District-in-Charge Minister Krishna Palemar inaugurated the flower show.
