Udupi, Mar 23: The people living near the coast, who had recently turned fearful at the prospect of tsunami hitting the country’s coast in the recent past, were in for a shock again on the night of Monday March 21. The sea level not only surged, but also it was turbulent. High tide was experienced in places like Kaup, Muloor, Uchchila, Mattu Udyavar and Padukere areas in the district, and the waves were huge, creating a rainy season-like scenario.
The waves were so huge and the force with which they hit the coast was so strong, that the water even entered the fisheries road in Katpady, Mattu Udyavar and Padukere on Tuesday afternoon. The fishermen, finding that the sea has been turning volatile since the last two days, have moored their smaller boats in safer places.
As water level in the rivulets rose in tune with the tide experienced in the sea, the people living nearer to the banks of rivulets in the district had to remain awake and watch the changing conditions. As water level at Kaup Light House rose by over a metre, the local youths kept themselves prepared for facing the eventuality of floods.
People living near the coast in Nellikunje Kadappura in Kasargod fled from their homes, after observing that the sea level was rising abnormally on Tuesday night. The tumultous sea had begun dragging over 20 fisheries boats, country boats, nets etc, kept on the shore. Some of the adventurous fishermen fought with the waves and saved these things from being washed away into the sea. The sea calmed down by 2 am on Wednesday.
Although it is common for the water level in the sea to rise during the new moon day and full moon day, the water level normally subsides within an hour. Since the last two days, disturbances in the sea have been stretching to three to four hours every time. Some people blame adverse climatic condition for this phenomenon.
