Mangaluru, Jul 8: Due to heavy rainfall, the main road at Adyapady collapsed. It is alleged that as the city received the highest rainfall, water from the runway flowed which resulted in the damage of the road.
MLA Dr Y Bharath Shetty and former MLA Mohiuddin Bava visited the spot.
According to locals, the road got damaged due to stone quarrying and the water released from the airport runway.
Nagesh Kullal member of Kandavara gram panchayat speaking to daijiworld said, "Initially, one part of the road was damaged when the monsoon began. As the district received heavy rainfall, the water from the airport runway was released which led to more damage to the road. Every year people are facing problems as the water is not discharged in a proper way. There is no proper storm water drainage. The MLA and minister have visited the spot. The work is in progress to facilitate people with proper connectivity."
Speaking to daijiworld, sources from airport authorities said that the operations at the airport are normal. “There is no danger to the runway. The landslip is outside the perimeter wall along the perimeter road. This perimeter road was partially damaged two days ago with water flow washing away the base of the culvert and the concrete part of the road was in a suspended state. Local authorities have since dismantled this part to initiate repair.”
