Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SS)

Mangaluru, Jul 13: A retired executive engineer of the minor Irrigation department was sentenced to six years of simple imprisonment and a penalty of Rs 2.5 crore by a city court.

Judge B B Jakati of the Third Additional District and Sessions Court of Mangaluru sentenced N T Rajagopal in a disproportionate asset case.

The Karnataka Lokayukta Police had filed a chargesheet against N T Rajagopal on March 17, 2010 stating that the accused had amassed wealth disproportionate to his known source of income.

Based on the chargesheet filed by deputy superintendent of Lokayukta police M Varnekar, the court conducted a probe. Judge B B Jakati pronounced the judgement on Tuesday, July 12.

The court ruled that if the convicted person fails to pay the penalty then the jail term will be extended by another one-and-a-half years.

Ravindra Munipadi argued in favour of the government.

N T Rajagopal had retired from service on October 30, 2016 from the engineering wing of the Yadgiri district Panchayat Raj department. Currently, he is under judicial custody in a Mangaluru prison.

Judgement like this can bring down the corruption to certain extent. Govt. should provide adequate funds to appoint enough judges to settle the case within 1-2 years time. Corruption cases should be tried in fast track courts.
