Mangaluru, Jul 16: Miscreants dumped waste on the roadside in Nandigudde thus violating the law.

Local residents have installed banners urging those people who dump waste on the roadside not to do so. But, residents violated the law by dumping waste on the roadside.

Recently, MCC also issued a notice to Pandeshwar police station to take stringent action against a pickup van owner for dumping the waste on the roadside.

A few came on their two-wheelers and dumped the waste on the roadside in spite of installing CCTV cameras on the spot by the Mangaluru City Corporation. In spite of warnings to the violators not to dispose the waste on the roadsides, it has been continuously violated, locals alleged.

The Mangaluru City Corporation has to take stringent action against those who throw waste on roadsides.

In this regard, to stop violators, the local residents held a unique protest against those who violate the law by throwing waste on the roadside.

The protestors under the banner of the United Nandigudda Sports and Cultural Association (R) installed a banner that wrote, "Take a photo of the person or vehicle, throwing waste or other materials, on the side of this road or surrounding areas."

Speaking to daijiworld.com, corporator Shailesh Shetty said, "The issue has been brought to the notice of the commissioner of the city corporation long back. Later, two CCTV cameras were installed as well. In this regard, I have personally spoken to the Mayor to sanction two additional CCTV cameras to be installed at the designated spot where waste is being dumped. Mayor has directed the officials to do the needful. For many days youth from the locality were watching the spot to avoid dumping of waste. Recently, I even caught an Omni car driver while throwing the waste and filed a case in Pandeshwar station. The police should also cooperate on these issues. "

He also said that the Mayor had spoken to the Police Commissioner to ask police officials to take action against violation of rules regarding disposal of wastes on the roadside. The disposal of waste had spread on the road as people had started avoiding being captured on the CCTV camera while they were throwing the waste.

This entire road (Vaman Nayak cross road) needs to be cleansed as it is beautiful road with trees. The Antony waste collecting co. also comes here to load unload the garbage which should be stopped.

Installing CCTV cameras is one thing and checking the footage regularly is quite another thing. The camera is placed at a point where the camera itself is blocked by a thick foliage of trees around it. There is very little lighting on that little stretch of road (about 200 metres long) which is unofficially known as Vaman Nayak road. Much of the garbage is dumped there late in the evening or early in the morning. And a huge pack of stray dogs that take shelter in the nearby crematorium make a mess of the garbage all over the road. Most of the garbage comes there in pretty large bags, evidently brought on two or three or four whealers. If the authorities really want to catch the culprits, you must randomly place two or three persons to watch (and catch) the garbage throwers. And of course, review the CCTV footage regularly for some time. It is no rocket science.  All you need is a consistent effort and a strict follow up action.

It is very easy to blame the offenders. I am not supporting them. However administration should provide proper facilities for disposal of waste. Antony garbage collection staff are very rude and do not collect all the garbage. The leftover garbage stinks till the next day. I had to bribe the staff to collect the garbage in one shot. But it is not possible for us to pay them every time got the things done as the property tax paid by us also includes garbage collection activity. If we complain, their cooperation becomes worse. So the best advice is not to swim against the tide.

Keep metal thrash bins at places where people could dispose their garbage. This is happening as thrash vans are not coming on time to clear garbage and people have no place to throw them .MCC please wake up for gods sake .Garbage vans are not sufficient and lots of under table cuts must be also happening for garbage collecting company to survive.40% minimum to the coffers!!!
