Karkala, Jul 17: ‘Onji Ponnu Undu Bala’ (a girl is there, come) was the entrapment used to entice mason Ananda Devadiga (60) into the dragnet by killers Sadananda Sherigar and Shilpa Poojary, who brutally murdered him by pouring petrol on the car inside which Ananda was made to sit forcibly.
Ananda was living alone. He used to work at various places in Karkala as mason. He also had a team of four daily wage labourers with him. Ananda was well known locally.
The previous day of his murder, Ananda had worked at a park under the limits of town municipality. He got a mobile call while working and he went away immediately. After that his mobile was switched off. The next day, when the daily wage labourers arrived to park to continue work, they were shocked to hear the chilling murder of Ananda.
The two days' wages of Ananda were given to a person who was known to him. Police suspect that the person who called Ananda saying that there is a girl must be accused Sadananda and the girl he referred to must be Shilpa.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Shilpa had taken Ananda to her house at Muroor Shivanagar of Hirgana and had mixed sleeping tablets with the alcohol.
Accused Sadanand Sherigar had put his clothes on Ananda and also left his mobile inside the car to fool the police. Sadanand Sherigar threw the clothes worn by deceased Ananda near Ennehole in a deserted place.
The Ford Ikon car that was used in the act was old and not in good condition. Sadananda got it repaired two days before murdering Ananda at a cost of Rs 27,000 at a garage near Kuntalpady.
There is a strong suspicion that the locals around the spot where Ananda was brutally killed must have been involved in the act. All the accused are from Karkala. The question that is bothering the cops is why the deceased was taken all the way to the deserted Henberu spot from Karkala. It is also said that the accused did not have knowledge of the deserted spot.
On the day of the act, it was raining heavily. The accused torched the car with the deceased inside between the midnight of July 12 and 1 AM of July 13. They did not stay back at the spot till the car burnt fully. So the cops suspect that some locals must have seen that the car and body were burnt completely.
Henberu deserted place has witnessed many acts of murder like Akshatha Devadiga, Rathna Kotari etc. A young girl was murdered here 20 years ago. Locals are concerned that this area is used for gruesome murders.
