Kundapur, Jul 20: Thousands of tourists from across the country and overseas throng Maravanthe beach to see the scenic beauty of the sea. However, there is no basic infrastructure including the safety of tourists on the beach.
Travelling on NH 66 at Maravanthe which runs between Arabian Sea on one side and river on the other is a feast to the eyes. The stretch begins from Trasi and ends at Silland.
Though NH 66 is developed by NHAI, street lights or high mast lights are still not installed. In the night, the travellers have to traverse in pitch darkness. If any untoward incident or accidents occur, people have to suffer for a long time before getting help. No one dares to stop the vehicle and help as it is dark.
Another issue is that on both sides of the national highway heavy trucks, containers and cars are parked by tourists who go to the beach to spend time. This causes traffic issues and also leads to accidents. Locals say that this kind of parking needs to be prohibited on the stretch.
Locals here also say that iron girders need to be installed on both sides of the road from Trasi to Maravanthe Silland to prevent vehicles from falling into the sea after losing control.
There are no guards here. Many tourists go on the break waters and take selfies which poses great danger in case they lose balance and fall into the sea.
