Mangaluru: Bone marrow transplant successfully performed in Unity Hospital

Mangaluru, Jul 28: The Medical Oncology specialist team of Dr Guruprasad Bhat and Dr Najeeb Behzad Mohammed successfully performed autologous stem cell transplant in a 20 years male cancer patient. The patient was suffering from Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.

He initially received chemotherapy. When the cancer relapsed, he was referred for bone marrow transplant. The procedure involved Stem Cell apharesis and Cryopreservation followed by high dose Chemotherapy for 4 days. This was followed by reinfusion of stem cells. Then the patient was under intensive care till engraftment of stem cells on 10th day. The patient was discharged next day after engraftment.

Unity Hospital is the 1st corporate hospital in Dakshina Kannada to perform this procedure. Along with renal transplant, bone marrow transplant can now be performed at the centre.
