Udupi: Prohibition on sale of liquor in DK - Tipplers throng neighbouring district

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Aug 2: Liquor lovers of Dakshina Kannada (DK) district thronged Udupi as the sale of liquor is banned in Dakshina Kannada district after the recent series of murders.

The sale of liquor boomed in bordering areas like Hejamady, Padubidri, Ermalu, Uchila, Kaup and Palimar. Customers were standing in queue to buy their favourite brands of liquor.

Usually, more number of customers are seen at the liquor outlets in the evening. However, the shops selling liquor in Udupi are experiencing a huge rush in the day time too. The owners say that every day, people from Dakshina Kannada arrive to the city and take liquor in large quantities for friends and acquaintances.

Bar and pub owners of Manipal also said that they had a bumper sale during the weekend.

Alcohol is freely available in a state where it's totally banned; the poor die like dogs drinking spurious hooch! Even in countries like Saudi booze is available; then what are you talking about here?

u don't lie 2 da commentators. da light cannot b hidden under da bushels. don't write blindly. a saudi liaison officer was caught & jailed 4 six months. 3 years 4 drinking 3 years 4 transporting a carton of alcohol. in da jail also he was getting alcohol. at dat time thursday & friday was rest day. captain will not b there. da security will b there. he will b selling alcohol at double da rate of da market. so all will enjoy booze in da jail. so u imagine, if da booze is available 4 da prisoners in da jail, den u tell me how da aam public will get alcohol in ksa. I asked da liaison officer, u didn't had money, how u bought booze. oho ho wallahi my friends were all big big super markets owners sons, dey r inside da jail. now don't say dis is a manufactured storey. dis is a truth which happened 2 my company's liaison officer. prisoners of ksa origin r getting monthly few dollars. expatriates r not given prisoners monthly money. 1nly 3 months jail & repatriation. if da company sponsor bribes officials expatriates can come out by corrupting officials.

The ban in DK is a futile exercise as the well off can always drive out or send his servant errands to fetch his quota till the DK prohibition ends; it's only the poor tipplers who will have to go dry? BTW, it's a bonanza sale opportunity for Udupi wineshop owners at the cost of their DK brethren who might be sulking for sure!! Overall, this type of a ban doesn't serve any purpose except a series of dry days to the poor tipplers and big loss for the bars and wineshops!!!

Already the excise is at the highest; increasing beyond a certain threshold they will lose a big chunk of customers who are at the lowest end of the chain!!

In some countries, there are so many incentives for people who want to go for casino and play there. Udupi bar people can think of such things like lunch for DK people, if only the ban on alcohol is permanent in DK. But, alcohol with many of our people has become a family disease. One may be drinking, but whole family suffers. That is bad. Drinking responsibly is good for health and for govt coffers.

"One may be drinking, but whole family suffers..." very beautiful comment Santan sir.... See the sentence which i picked up from your comment....Do you think, people of this nature can drink responsibly ? If he knows and drinks responsibly, will his family suffer ? Will his family scatter ? Drinking at home in front of growing children and that too, in the evening hours where all fsmily members meet together after the work/study and the time dedicated to family prayers/family meal/family talks send negative vibes among the growing children. Responsible person drinks when his children are not in front looking at the devils urine...How out young children learn to drink ? Maneye modala paata shale...
