Udupi, Aug 26: A demolition move by Udupi CMC has created much uproar among the public in Udupi. Udupi CMC on Friday, Aug 26 moved to demolish an under-construction fish market in Kinnimulky stating the construction was illegal. The CMC officials bulldozed the under-construction shed.
This move by the CMC has led to a public furore and protests. The locals under the leadership of social worker Krishnamurthy Acharya, objected to the move of CMC and demanded a notice from the CMC officials present.
Speaking with the media, Amrutha Krishnamurthy, local CMC member said, "We have been demanding the construction of a shed for a decade in vain. So using my own funds, I had constructed this shed. Two days ago, the CMC officers obstructed the construction of the shed. Today morning, I visited the CMC commissioner and inquired about the matter. No notice was given prior to the demolition. It was constructed from my own funds and not from CMC money."
For the past 40 years, the fisherwomen were selling sea food here in a roadside open space. The locals too have objected to the move of the CMC and demanded similar action against other illegal constructions in the city.
Malpe police arrived on the spot and handled the situation.
