Mangaluru, Aug 29: Daiji Dubai honoured Konkani’s ace poet Melvyn Rodrigues and celebrated his 60th birthday with a unique event named 'The intro of Melwyn's literature along with its glimpse'.

The event contained an interactive session, poetry recitation and songs held at the World Konkani Centre, Shakthinagar, Mangaluru on Sunday, August 28. Daiji Dubai Mangaluru unit was the local organiser.

In his interaction with Kishoo Barkur, President Kavita Trust, Melwyn said, “I had a clear vision in the formation of Kavita Trust. Through Kavita Trust I tried to create a poetic atmosphere which was very much needed for Konkani.  I am very much happy to say Kavita Trust has succeeded in creating a poetic surrounding in Konkani. The mission statement which I was writing at the time of formation of Kavita Trust has achieved all its major objectives.”

William Pais, writer and thinker sought Melwyn's sentiments on various awards. He tried to know Melwyn's stand on returning awards to the concerned authorities and institutions in the form of protest to protect public interest.

"Because of my family and neighbourhood, I was quite religious in my childhood days. Poverty taught me various lessons and slowly a socialist was born inside my mind. I started to read books and gained knowledge. At the same time I chose poems to express my thoughts and feelings. You may call it progressive or not. But I succeeded in reflecting my surroundings and society through my poems," Melwyn said in his answer to the question of Vitori Karkal, PRO, Maand Sobhann.

Poet Andrew L D Cunha sought answers from Melwyn about his mission in the Konkani poetic world and his efforts on creating poets in Konkani. Replying to Andrew, Melwyn said " I never created poets. I only showed them a path by creating a poetic atmosphere."

Guru Baliga, well-known Konkani organiser and CEO of WKC and poet Titus Noronha honoured Melwyn with a garland and memento.

Danica Pahal Permude, Eldon D Souza Bajal and Rohan Adkabare recited poems written by Melwyn. Well-known singer Jason Lobo sang some of the songs penned by Melwyn. Sanjay Rodrigues of Gayan Gazali fame backed up with music for the poetry recitation and the singing part.

Daiji Dubai Mangaluru unit convenor Vincent Pinto proposed a vote of thanks. Manoj Fernandes, Kirem compered the event.
