Udupi: Storm water drain closed, locals fear water overflowing into their homes

Daijiworld Media Network – Udupi (HB/EP)

Udupi, Sep 7: A storm water drain was closed near Doddanagudde district panchayat primary school by the municipal council for carrying out concretisation work here. Local people expressed fears that the drain may overflow because of the work and inundate their homes.

The local councillor who was informed about it has assured to set it right within three months.

The local people say that the engineer had ignored their pleas when the work was in progress. Waste water from about 12 houses flows through it. As shrubs have grown on the other side, water is not able to flow freely. People have requested the council officials to act quickly.

Check out those sticks and stones barriers in the media photographs for man and dogs not to trample on the newly laid concrete! How modern are the Contractor and Engineer. Truly Udupi standard!

This is how the Udupi Municipality and the PWD in tandem work. Just a layer of concrete they call it a road, with no walkway or pavement and no drainage foreseen and of course lighting is still a dream in our BJP Modi claimed Trillion Dollar Advanced country! Why don’t the central government put out a specification on design and requirements as a legislation and regulation on a road project such as drainage, pavement, lighting, breakdown parking area, bus stand parking space and height evenness with the surroundings.

Thomas i fully agree with you. But here the big question is , will adjacent property owners sacrifice a bit of land for public use. ? The existing road width is very narrow, not enough place for footpath or rain water drainage. We all expect wide roads , walkway ,streat lamps ,but sad part is not ready to leave a inch of space for public cause. Live example is there in yesterday's DW news.
