Mangalore, Jul 24: A woman who was accused by her NRI husband of cheating on him and misusing Rs 70 lac over a number of years, came before the media on Monday July 23 and levelled counter-allegations against him.
Last week, Gantalkatte, Moodbidri resident Aboobakker, who now stays in Saudi Arabia, had alleged that his wife Sameera (26) had cheated on him and wasted Rs 70 lac on 'boyfriends', besides pocketing gold worth over a crore from neighbours.
Rubbishing the allegations, Sameera told reporters that her husband had physically abused her for many months and even threatened to kill her. She claimed that all his allegations were false, aimed at tarnishing her image.
She also alleged that Aboobakker had married another woman six months ago without her consent and without obtaining talak (divorce) from her. "He spread rumours against me and filed a false complaint that I had misused his money. He has threatened to throw acid on me," she claimed.
Sameera denied allegations of misusing her husband's money and said that a sum of Rs 5,80,000 which was spent from bank account had gone on house repairs and on purchasing household items. She questioned as to how a man earning only Rs 12,000 could send Rs 70 lac.
On certain pictures released by her husband accusing her of extra-marital affairs, she said that she had been on an outing to Bangalore with her family of 13, with the permission of her husband. She alleged that Aboobakker had misused a few of the photos and videos taken on that trip to blackmail her.
She even accused him of mentally torturing her and of plotting to kill her. She said that he would lock her in a room every day and thrash her with eight canes, and when her parents and brother came to protect her, he locked them too.
She further levelled grave allegations that her husband had been conspiring to release a blue film of her, and tried to force her into prostitution in Saudi, but she refused and was sent back to India. When her mother threatened him on learning of the incident, he is said to have asked for forgiveness.
Sameera said that he had harassed her for dowry and demanded money whenever he came back from Saudi. She claimed that she was made to sign on blank cheques twice, and had to take a loan of Rs 6 lac to meet his demands, and that to pay back the loan she had to sell her mother's property.
Sameera has filed a complaint with the Moodbidri police against her husband, and named four others - Kabir, Latif, Hasan Monu and Ahmed Bava of conspiring with him.
Requesting the police through the media to protect her and her family from Aboobakker, she lamented that police had not taken any action against him on an earlier complaint filed by her in January this year.
Sameera's mother Naseema was present at the press meet.
Much to the curiosity of the media persons, a police car followed the two women as they left the press club in another car. There was also a Maruti Ritz parked at some distance, possibly belonging to Aboobakker's family.
