Mangalore, Aug 4:
"The primary aim of religion is to safeguard humanity, and it is still existing because of broad-minded people. There is a need for unity among the people in the society," said writer B T Lalitha Nayak.

She was addressing a protest meet organized by Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike, Dakshina Kannada district in front of the DC’s office here on Saturday August 4. The protestors condemned the attack of Hindu Jagarana Vedike activists on Morning Mist Home Stay in Padil on Saturday July 28.

She pointed out that there is law to handle any illegal activity that people may come across, and that it becomes the responsibility of the police department to deal with such situations. "The attack on the youngsters at the home stay was against the Consititution. The activists objected to the clothes the girls had worn at the party, but what one wears is one's personal choice, the activists are no one to dictate," she said.

Referring to corruption cases in the state, she said the country's resources were being gulped down by politicians. "It was painful to see a former CM of this state being imprisoned," she added.

"This is the country of great people like Gandhi, Basavanna and many others, and it needs more number of educated people," she said. She urged the police to arrest all the attackers in the incident and called for a ban on Hindu communal outfits.

Another speaker, journalist Gauri Lankesh said that Hinduism is in itself not a religion. "It is a system of heirarchy in society. Women are treated as second class creatures, she said and added that only the Constitution can be India's religion. She pointed out that RSS was behind all the unrest, like riots in Gujarat, bomb blast in Samjotha Express and rape of nuns in Odisha. She too demanded a ban on Hindu communal outfits.

K L Ashok, state general secretary of Karnataka Komu Souharda Vedike said that the attack on youths in the home stay incident was an attack on democracy. "It is an embarrassment for all the Hindus. RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat should be booked under goonda act and HJV leader Jagadish Karanth should be banned from India," he said.

Congress leader P V Mohan said there is at least one Muslim and a Dalit languishing in jail for no fault of theirs. "The contributions of the Muslim and the dalit communities to the district have been forgotten," he said.

D K district Mahila Vedike, diocese council of Christian women, Catholic Sabha Mangalore, Karnataka Rajya Dalith Sangharsha Samithi, National Women's Front, Ahinda Mangalore, Indian Christian Youth Movement, PUCL, PFI, among others were part of the protest.

Earlier, a rally was taken from Ambedkar Circle to the DC’s office. After the protest, a memorandum addressed to the governor of Karnataka government was submitted to the DC.

I feel that people including Komu Sauhardha Vedike should come down heavily on "Kaama Sauhardha" activities in the city resorts,Stayhomes etc., which is the root cause of all these disturbances.Religion, religious outfits have no role to paly here.It is in the interest of residents of the city.Prejudicial views, protests will not help towards finding any solutions.

People are united from every religion. Home stay attack incident did not pleased any society friendly people, let the law meakers act quickly against Hindu Jagarana vedike rowdys. Don't let out country to adopt Thalibanism. Mangalore is taking name around the world for the wrong reasons. The situation of law and order in the state is in compleate ruin. Even police join their halping hand with the thiefs and rapists. How disgraceful to the image of our country where we call ourselves modern and launched many satellites in one go but fail to fix the land "law and order" situation!

Police who involved in the attack must be terminated from the job, they don't deserve it, they are more worse than the Hindu Jagarana Vedike rowdys. They are the one ascorted the criminals. It is a deep root and it must me excavated and rooted out completely. Unite until the work is accomplished. Don't look at the religion but look at the spiritual and human values. Human rights are same for all religions there is no religion to human rights. Raise up Mangalore raise up now and show that we are united regardless cast, tribe, culture, language and religion. SAFETY FIRST IN THE LAND WHERE WE LIVE. When ever we stand for the truth God's hand will be upon us.

God bless all who unite for the sake of democracy and freedom, freedom is the greatest gift from God to the mankind.

We all condemn the in-human attack... It was a shameful act by the rowdies. All the culprits must be brought to justice. But this incident is being used for vested interests. What do you mean by - "Hinduism is in itself not a religion. It is a system of heirarchy in society. Women are treated as second class creatures, she said" - Hinduism (Sanatana Dharma) regards utmost respect to Women, this is the heights of narrow mindedness and stereotyping. The goons who have committed this dirty act have no clue as to what Dharma means... and the people who are making such stereotypical statements have no sense of language the combination both creates communal tensions. I condemn the attack on the students and at the same time condemn such mindless statements about my Dharma - Hinduism

Best way to protect religion is to practice it at our homes. By just creating a sene, vedike, dal one can not protect the religion. Because all these are employing uneducated poor people to succeed in their ulterior motives. In fact they themselves do not follow religion or they do not know what is religion...!!!????

I hardly see 100 people attending this march and public meeting. Does this mean Mangaloreans are not really bothered about this incident? Or have they moved on?

We should be careful of likes of Gowri Lankesh and others who happily do a bidding for others to further spoil Mangalore's name and reputation.

I request Daijiworld to tone down coverage a notch considering the damage non-stop coverage is doing to "brand Mangalore"

Mangalore's name is already sullied by these thugs. Police have arrested them and most likely thugs will be in jail for a year. It is time let law take its course and rebuild Mangalore's brand name again.

There are thousands of people who depend on out of state/city students and investment in Mangalore. If Mangalore's brand name is gone its impact will be felt across all spheres of society.

In short we don't want these outside associations and personalities to tarnish Mangalore's name further. Let law take its course.
