Woman brutally attacked in Bangalore ATM

Updated

Bangalore, Nov 19 (IANS): A woman was critical after an unidentified assailant attacked her Tuesday with a machete inside an automatic teller machine (ATM) kiosk in the city centre.

"The incident occurred when the assailant hit the victim, Jyothi Uday, 44, a manager in the Corporation Bank's Mission Road branch, on the head with a machete inside her bank's ATM kiosk and left her bleeding before disappearing with her cash (Rs.2,500) and mobile," Deputy Commissioner of Police D.C. Rajappa told IANS here.

She was rescued by passers-by who noticed blood spilling on the road from inside the kiosk, whose shutter was pulled down by the assailant after the attack.

No security guard was present at the kiosk when the incident took place.

Jyothi is battling for life in a hospital.

"We have registered a case under section 397 of the Indian Penal Code for attempting to cause death or grievous injury while committing robbery or dacoity and formed a special team to nab the assailant at the earliest," Rajappa said.

The CCTV camera footage, obtained by the police from the bank, shows the unmasked assailant entering the kiosk when Jyothi was before the ATM to draw cash, and threatening her after pulling down the shutter from inside.

"As seen in the footage, the assailant took out a country pistol and a machete from a shoulder bag and asked Jyothi to draw cash from the ATM. When she tried to escape, he pushed her to a corner and hit her on the head with a machete. After checking her bag, he left the kiosk by again pulling down its shutter from outside," Rajappa described after viewing the footage.

The ATM kiosk is located on the ground floor of the LIC building diagonally opposite the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike head office in the Corporation Circle and a furlong from the Ulsoor Gate police station.

"As the assailant did not wear any mask and is clearly seen in the footage, we have circulated his photo to all police stations and check-posts to trap him before he gets out of the city. We are hopeful of cracking the case," Rajappa added.

First Govt need to BAN the shutters @ ATM Centre's, Instead of shutter Bank management should arrange a security guard @ every ATM across INDIA, Keeping CCTV Is not a matter their should be a operator's for every bank ATM to check what's going on and to take immediate action accordingly, And just hang that culprit in public to avoid the same in future, Jai Hind..!

ATM means any time money. No doubt it is good scheme provides a good facility for its customers to have money in case of urgency and emergencies. But this system is not properly implemented by the Bank authorities. Why shirk responsibility when CC camera, watchman is not provided for the safety of the customer? In many places watchman, Guards are not provided. Even though they post one he is not bothered about the customers' safety. He chit-chat with somebody somewhere else without giving proper attention to his work allotted. Some people sit on the stool kept inside the ATM room and chat disturbing others. Sometimes college girl students and some nurses come in a group and enter the ATM chamber and make a hell of a noise by talking vociferously creating some chaos inside. So these things should not be continued in future. Bank Managers and authorities should post a strict watchman with proper instructions. If he is discharging his duties properly he should be sacked. Some watchmen are sitting outside the room and dosing. Such is our system. When something of the incident like Bangalore happens everybody wakes up and tries to do something So our ATm has become now Any Time Murder!

Brutal people are not afraid of police, case and court now because whatever the sin may be, money can jump over all problems. Court and case to be made strong and judgement to be out at the earliest possible. People should raise their voice unitedly. Until all this happens, these kind of incidents will be happening regularly.

What happened was sad. Its very unfortunate. It is very easy to say have one security guard at each ATM, with the growing labour problem it is not easy to manage this especially when there are new ATMs cropping on a daily basis. Add to it all the compliance wrt ESI,PF etc which is a tedious task for any employer. Governments should make it easy to hire contract staff first because as of now it is very difficult to run business in India.

Today Banks are becoming business minded 'Commercial'.
Forgotten the days where priority was given for customer service.
Public money, our money and we need to get in to trouble while depositing and withdrawing both.
Now Bank management is giving lot explanation their official opening and closing timing, their duty related things etc. But they failed to explain why there is no security guard ???
    Why then ATM need shutters?

Most of the countries ATM'S are located in shopping malls without shutter and in open areas like outside any commercial building without shutters.
Shutters are more dangerous that banks should realize because it can be misused for any other purpose too.
Hope at least now Banks open their mind for public and social safety to, otherwise public should take care of these ATM'S without security guards.

Very Very Unfortunate Incident.. My heart was shaken after seeing this video.. This guy looks like a very very Professional killer, He doesn't seem to be in hurry at all, he spent almost 3.3 mins inside the ATM shows how daring he is... No mask... no fear nothing...
Most of the Bank ATMS in India doesn't have security guards or CCTV cameras, I wish Govt. to furnish all the banks severely who doesn't have security personal and non working CCTV in it... After all banks run with public money, and when there is Lacs of Rupees lying in the ATM, banks cannot be so careless not to provide Security personals...
Banks Officials enjoy a lot with public money, so it is their duty to give full security as well..
Most of the Time, There will be Security personnel for every ATM ON PAPER.. but in reality there will not be.. This is the result of Bribe... Bank Officials take a Tender for 100 security guards, they tie up with one Security Agencies, That agency guy will supply only 60 security guards, and they share revenue of remaining 40 security guard's salary.. So on paper banks will have 100 security guards, but in reality only 60.. Rest goes in the form of Bribe with bank officials and Security agency..
And the REsult of it, is in front of us... I wish her a Speedy Recover...

We are just alerting when such incident occurs. Or else I see so many ATMs at city here ( Mangalore ) where there are no security guards. Initially it was observed each ATM had a security person sitting outside the ATM. Now a day, slowly it's vanished and I always think how can this happen. There is nobody to help you during such incidents, especially during odd hours like late evenings or early mornings. So, it's the responsibility of banks to provide the security persons at each ATMs of their bank. Let's react quicker and ensure we have this in place. As a responsible citizens what we can do is, if we find any ATMs without any security persons , lets call the bank immediately and either alert them or threat them if no action is taken within some time limit. If stil you find bank sot responding, alert us in such portals or media so that we can start withdrawing our relationship with such banks which doesn't take care of our security.
