Udupi, Aug 9: Niranjan Bhat, the accused in the murder of businessman Bhaskar Shetty, has attempted suicide inside Manipal jail.
It is learnt that Bhat attempted suicide late night on Monday August 8.
Sources said that Niranjan tried to end his life by swallowing his diamond ring and two ear studs. As he swallowed the entire ring with the diamond and ear studs intact, it did not cause much harm. The consequence would have been severe if the diamond had been cut or crushed, hospital sources said.
He was immediately rushed to Ajjarkad hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.
After it was ascertained that the ring and ear studs had remained inside Niranjan, the doctors at the hospital recommended a scan to locate the ring and ear studs , but as reporters started swarming the place, he refused to leave the ICU.
Niranjan, a young astrologer, who was absconding in the Bhaskar Shetty murder case, was arrested and lodged in Manipal police station. On Monday August 8, he was taken to Nandalike for inspection of the crime scene. He is accused of helping Bhaskar's wife Rajeshwari and son Navaneeth in consigning the body completely to flames after the murder and throwing the ashes and other evidences into a stream at Nandalike. He was reportedly close to Rajeshwari and also allegedly helped her in hatching the murder conspiracy.
