Udupi: Minister Madhwaraj lauds KRV for promoting Kannada in state

Udupi, Aug 13: “There are various regional languages in Udupi. City has given opportunities for many languages to flourish along mother tongue. Kannada is the only state language which is able to tie all in one knot. Coastal people have more passion towards English than Kannada. That is the reason for decreased number of enrolments of students in the Kannada medium schools every year. It is very sad. We were slave of Britishers till 1947 after that we have become slaves to English language,” said district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj during a taluk-level convention ‘Kannada Nudi Belaku -2017’ organized by Karnataka Rakshana Vedike on Sunday, August 13.


    


















“When other foreign countries have spoken against the use of English language and committed towards their national language, why not Karnataka?  Kannada medium students fail during interviews. Most of the companies conduct interviews in English.”

He encouraged the Karnataka Rakshana vedike activists to put more efforts in preserving the Kannada language. “Time will come in the state when an interviewee will give interview in Kannada and companies will have to give them an option to speak in Kannada instead of English.”

“Late scientist U R Rao was able get recognition across the country though he studied in Kannada medium school. If a person loves Kannada, it does not mean that he neglects other languages. People should fight for preserving the Kannada language. No one should neglect Kannada and if he does, it would be a crime,” he added.

Speaking on the occasion, Sri Vishwaprasanna Swamiji of Pejawar math said, “KRV has always been fighting for the survival and revival of Kannada. The people of Karnataka should cherish and promote the Kannada language. If everyone loves and develops passion for Kannada only then our mother tongue will flourish.”
 
The programme was held at Narayanaguru auditorium. Sujay Poojary delivered the keynote address. TA Narayana Gowdru, state KRV president presided over the programme.


Fr Albun D'Souza, parish priest, Our Lady of Vailankanni Shrine at Stella Maris church Kalmady, Akbar Ali, state advisory committee member, Jamathe Islam Karnataka, Amrith Shenoy, eminent businessman, Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje president of CMC, S R Lobo, district president, KRV, Madhusudhan Gowda, taluk president others were present.

    Kannada is not a national language but only a regional language on par with other languages recognized by the Eighth Schedule to the Indian Constitution. The other languages include Konkany. Tulu is also a major language of the Konkan coast which derives its name from the Konkan people, not from Kannadigas. Before Kannada is shoved down the throats of coastal people, take a census of languages spoken here.

    Yes, I had Kannada as a second language during my days, and English as the main language of instruction in school, but outside school I spoke neither; always spoke Konkani and Tulu. And even to this day, after leaving Mangalore on the eve of Independence 70 years ago, and have not been in touch with spoken languages other than English for the last 57 years in the West, I can converse freely in Konkany and Tulu and still remember the Kannada script in which Konkany has been and is being written. I have not forgotten Kannada either, and can still remember a few poetry stanzas and can still recall the scenes in the old novel called PRASCHATHAPPA which was our "non-detailed" Kannada book.

    So, leave Kannada as a regional language, just like Konkany and others, and let them all flourish - don't shove them through the throat by making it compulsory.
