Bengaluru: Deve Gowda downplays PM Modi's praise, rules out alliance with BJP

Bengaluru, May 2 (PTI): A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi lavished praise on him at an election rally in Karnataka, JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda today sought to play it down, saying it did not mean both parties were cosying up to each other.

Gowda also slammed chief minister Siddaramaiah for suggesting that his party would back BJP. He claimed that it was Siddaramaiah who wanted to become Chief Minister in 2004 with the saffron party support when he was in the JD(S).

Virtually endorsing Modi's criticism of Rahul Gandhi for having 'insulted' him, the JD(S) supremo also said a Kannadiga had become Prime Minister and Siddaramaiah tried to "demolish" Kannadigas' pride.

"This is how Congress gives respect to Kannada pride," Gowda, who was the prime minister heading the United Front government at the centre during 1996-97, told a press conference here. He asserted JD(S) would come back to power in the May 12 polls, and discounted possibility of a hung assembly.

"Maybe, by praising me, he (the prime minister) wants to gain sympathy. That is all. That does not mean there is an understanding (between BJP and JD(S))," Gowda said.

"In fact, the JD(S) is confident of forming the government on its own with the cooperation of TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu, Chandrasekhar Rao (of TRS) and other friends in political arena... I do not expect a hung assembly," he said.

"I have been saying this and I will say this again - we are confident of forming government on our own," the JD(S) chief said.

In remarks that raised eyebrows in political circles, Modi, while launching the second leg of his campaign blitz for the assembly elections, had lashed out at Congress president Rahul Gandhi for "insulting" Gowda, saying it showed his "arrogance".

Showering praise on Gowda at a rally in Udupi, the Prime Minister had said Gowda was one of the most respected and tallest leaders for whom he had great respect.

Modi's remarks relating to Gowda were seen as extending an olive branch to the JD(S) veteran to keep the options open for the BJP in the event of a hung verdict. Hitting back at Siddaramaiah, Gowda said he "wanted to be the chief minister with the support of BJP when he was in my party in 2004. I said no. Now Siddaramaiah is spreading this that I will support BJP."

He was responding to a query on Siddaramaiah's remarks that the JD(S) and BJP have a tacit understanding for the elections.

The 2004 assembly polls had thrown up a fractured verdict with the BJP emerging as the single largest party. Congress, which lost power, and JD(S) had formed a coalition government then. It collapsed after Gowda's son H D Kumaraswamy joined hands with BJP and formed an alternative government with it.

Earlier today in Hubbali, Siddaramaiah alleged there was a tacit understanding between JD(S) and BJP which was reflected in Modi's praise for Gowda.

"Deve Gowda should be admitted to old-age care centre - Who told this? Is it not the Prime Minister? Now he is praising him. What does this mean? This is a political statement and it clearly shows there is a tacit understanding between JD(S) and BJP," he said.

Gowda said JD(S) has only joined hands with BSP which will make things"easier for the party to gain votes in 20 places. "This alliance will continue in Lok Sabha elections too. Other than this, we have not tied up with any national party," he said.

On Siddaramaiah's attack on him for playing dynastic politics, Gowda said, "His son also is contesting from Varuna. What is the answer for that?"

The BJP does not seem to have learnt any lessons from the rejection it received from the people of Karnataka in 2013. Its list of candidates demonstrates that the party is running out of ideas and options. The list includes Somashekara Reddy and Sriramulu of the Reddy brothers’ clique which was accused of illegal mining on a grand scale.
The one party that is hoping for a hung assembly is former Prime Minister Deve Gowda’s Janata Dal (Secular), who is eager to hold the key to government formation. The JD (S) will certainly secure some seats in the Kaveri basin, where it is mainly in a direct fight with the Congress. But already there is a groundswell of concern that JD (S) will cut into anti-BJP votes and actually help BJP.
This prospect is reminding the public of the horrible instability that Karnataka witnessed during the JD (S)-BJP coalition era and the general lack of trustworthiness of the JD (S). This is likely to lead to more strategic voting, away from the JD (S) towards the Congress as a way of keeping the tainted BJP out and to ensure that Karnataka will deliver a clear majority to the Congress come 15 May 2018. That’s where this crucial battle for the soul of India is headed.
JD(S) is lost credibility claim itself way back 2006 forming alliance with BJP. Now father wants disown but son goes on with secret deal wishing to be Chief Minister of the state one time.
Is Karnataka voters want Nitish Kumar Bihar or CM Siddaramaiah continuation as development oriented government?

    Am I missing something here?????
Ex PM HD Deve Gowda is sure of JD(S) forming the government with cooperation of Chandrababu Naidu (TDP) and Chandrashekar Rai (TRS). What is he hinting at? Is a merger or formation of a federal system between Karnataka, Andra Pradesh and Telengana on the anvil or it is good old Deve Gowda day dreaming. Mungeri Lal would be proud of this concept.
So much for the Kannadiga pride that he is otherwise talking about, he now needs cooperation from TDP and TRS.

What a tamasha between these two. In 2014 the one says that he will leave India if the other gets the top post and the other responds by saying he will send him to an old age home. Now when the other praises the one he pretends he has amnesia. This is not just hypocrisy but utter shamelessness. Just for muslim votes ? Is this not divide and rule of the Feku party ? Is this not vote bank politics of the Feku party ?
