Mangaluru, Jan 6: Fire erupted at Pacchanady dumping yard on Friday January 6, resulting cloud of thick smoke across Pacchanady.

Firefighters rushed to the spot to douse the fire. Fire was intensifying across the dumping yard and spreading all over the garbage.

Mayor Jayanand Anchan, MLA Dr Bharath Y Shetty, corporator Sangeetha Nayak, and Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) commissioner Akshy Sridhar also reached the spot.

MLA Dr Bharath Y Shetty said, “During summer, we have seen such fire incidents occur here. Methane gas release leads to self-ignition. Heavy wind intensifies the fire. As many as 10 firefighters from NMPT, airport and KIOCL reached the spot. Also 10 excavators which are here will roll the waste. Due to heavy wind, the direction of fire has been changing. We need approximately a day-and-a-half to douse the fire. As many as 100 people are already in the spot to douse the fire. I have held discussion with the deputy commissioner to shift people to safer places to avoid any health hazards. Such fire incidents should not reoccur. We have already started the work of legacy waste removal. Rs 56 crore fund has been released to the MCC from the central government. It will take 2 years for legacy waste disposal.”

Being a resident in the neighborhood of this area.. it feels sick to keep inhaling the smoke coming from this fire... And also it keeps me wondering how does the fire erupt only during the night and not during the day.... Also how can it be self ignition when the temperature during the night is much lower than in the day... Today is the 12th of Jan 23 and still they aren't able to put off of the fire... We get to see thick smoke still loitering in the sky and the burn stench is terrible especially in the night...

Irrespective of parties, this is what happens if the priorities are misplaced. Even worser if we have non-competent people. I feel sorry for the residents around pacchanaadi who face the dirty waste of city.

I was a resident of Pachanadi for about 6 years. Fire in that area is common during Summers. Even we had a incident where we had to call fire engine to doze the fire. That is all ok. But the stench coming from the dumping yard makes it difficult to live there. Authorities need to work on proper way of disposal of garbage or atleast relocate people who live there very close to the dumping yard.

The Delhi story is getting repeated here. Mountains of garbage at Panchanady, An absolutely shoddy system of garbage collection from the city leading to stinking black spots overflowing with garbage everywhere. The contract with Antony Waste has expired on 31st January 2022, it was at first extended till 31st January 2023 and now plans are afoot to extend it again for a further period of six months. All this has been done without any tendering process. After all who cares as long as the taxpayer is there to pay.

This incompetent govt has made this garbage dump a giant environment hazard area. Govt must invest in proper garbage recycling and management. No such dangerous incidents occur in other countries where garbage is managed and disposed in scientific manner. If left untreated this area will become a smouldering keg to explode and create more pollution, endangering living species and spread of disease.
