Animals are Beautiful People

November 2, 2013

My earliest memory of animals runs down to that night when my dad told me a bedtime story about this cow; she was grazing in the fields, all by herself, one fine sunny morning when she was attacked by a tiger. She pleaded to the tiger to let her go home and bid one last good bye to her calf; she promised that she would return for him to eat her. The tiger obliged and the cow lived up to her promise; and I? Well, I cried that entire night till my pillow could soak no more tears; I must have been around five or six years old.

I have loved animals ever since I can remember; and having a heart with a melting point like that of chocolate just adds to it! That said, I’ve never really been around animals much except when I went back home, to Mangalore – we’ve got dogs and cats. Other than that it was just the strays on my way to school or on my way back from church, perhaps. Just last year though it all changed; I started working with a publication house that supports animals in a big way and not just that, there are two cats that live in our office villa; Thomas and Princess have been around for a longer time than most of my colleagues . We even have fish, turtles and rabbits! My friends think I work at the zoo but I totally love it. It just makes the ambience so light and takes my mind off things; when I need a break from work I just play with the cats or watch the fish swim around in their tank; it’s soothing.

What I also love about this whole animal-friendly office set-up is that it has made me more sensitive to animals. It’s like they are my pets and believe me, loving animals is one thing but having your own pets is a totally different ball game; it’s beautiful how you learn so much about them - their likes and dislikes, their body language when they’re sad or happy, their behavior when they’re hungry; you gradually get used to their rhythms as they get used to yours. I believe everyone must have pets at least once in their life. I know it’s difficult especially when you live in flats and closed apartments but I believe there is a solution to this. We all see strays around our buildings, rummaging through garbage cans. Why not take responsibility for at least one stray; it doesn’t cost much. Sometimes we even waste food at home; maybe we could put that to better use.

I live in Bahrain and it’s amazing how so many people here strive to make the world a better place for animals in this small and beautiful island. We have Bahrain Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals and Tony The Dogfather who actually take care of strays and try and find homes for them. I interviewed a Bahraini lady, earlier this year; she feeds stray dogs in different areas of Bahrain and even offers them medical assistance if needed. Most five star hotels in Bahrain offer leftover food to Tony The Dogfather who uses it for the many animals under his care. Last but not the least, the publisher and editor of the magazine that I write for; she is an animal lover and that is an understatement. It’s like stray cats simply find their way to her. These are just few of the many people; I’m sure there are many more unsung heros out there.

True that we cannot love, unless we learn how to love the least of creation. Animals are living beings like you and me; all they need is some love and care. So, are you going to feed a stray today?

Of all the creatures, man is the only one..the solitary one..that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. All creatures kill, man is the only one that kills in malice, the only one that kills for revenge.

For many years when source of information became advanced, I have been reading many articles on animals through google and I observed that people who love and care about animals go for Veg. food to save animals from being butchered. Did we ever realize that those who eat Veg. food also have to kill plants for food and medicines. There are lots and lots of plants that have medicinal benefits that is researched commercially. Should we not love plants and stop being killed. I love animals and plants from my heart as they are natures gift but when it comes to my stomach I think of both Veg and Non Veg. By being Non Veg. it does not reduces my love for animals. Jai Ho to all Animals that are beautiful people.

Instead of tug of war, if we follow the imbalanced seesaw or weighing scale, the opportunity is to have a revolution on surface transport.
Let us open our eyes and see that we have been carrying and pulling (blindly /purposely) the bullock cart on wheels, since a couple of centuries, to face the severe problems.
Let us enjoy this momentary life with beautiful animals/people, by making a world of difference.

Arjun, reading your reply, I rightly said "If I act smart with a fool, I become a greater fool". So the article is true "Animals are beautiful people" proves the fact that "To be faithful is canine and to be arrogant and irresponsible is human".

@ Eric Coelho: :) you're all 'beautiful people' because you ruthlessly kill and consume animals which have been brought up in horrific conditions and have met an even brutal end? And I'm the one who is ugly and make irresponsible comments because I take a stand for those mute helpless animals and ask you to question your conscience if you're doing the right thing?? Strange are the ways of this world! No Melissa?? :)

@ Rachel.. Do you know that all the food problems all over the world would be solved if a majority of us cut down on meat n switch to apparent based diet? Imagine the amount of water n other crop foods that is required to rear and bring up animals like cows and pigs? Isn't it obvious that the same amount of water and land can feed so many mouths more if utilized to grow grains n vegetables? N btw, yes, I avoid even killing mosquitoes, use nets n mosquito repellents to keep them away,, isn't it important to just strive to lessen cruelty as much as we can? Culture can be challenged, kindness opens doors which can't be opened with a lot of other things

@ Abutalmiz.. What science are you talking about?? Do you have any reference source for what you'r talking? In any case, isn't mere common sense enough to figure out the difference between slitting the throat of a poor animal and cutting an Apple in half?

    Dear Melissa,
Congratulations, Your Writing skill has improved a lot. you have brought in simplicity in it. This Article in particular, Let me say something. The Creator of all these living beings has put a system to keep them in checks and Balance. A rat as food for cat, Cat for Dog, a Dog for Tiger and so forth, finally the Man who is a rational animal, is the master who is entrusted with the power to rule and govern.
Keep it up and write some more articles.

@Arjun: Doesn't each one of us ively love? We love some people over others. Same way, we love some animals over others. By eating beef, mutton, I've never denied the fact that these animals don't have emotions. They do. But I don't find anything wrong with it, because these animals are bred for eating. Ok, so let's take the converse of your logic. Does it mean that all vegetarians love all animals? Even reptiles like snakes or frogs? If I start taking your logic seriously, then from tomorrow onwards, when any mosquito bites you, you shouldn't kill it. Why not? Doesn't a mosquito or a housefly, also have emotions? Don't they feel the pain too?

My point is that nature has evolved in such a complex way, that each creature on earth has it's own part/role to play in the food chain. Don't animals eat each other? and FYI, if from tomorrow onwards, every human being on earth turns vegetarian, there won't be enough food for everyone. There is ample food for vegans because non-vegetarians exist. And for your last question, my answer is that- to each his own. If Koreans eat dogs, then it's their choice, not mine, Same way, as you have chosen to go veg and me, non-veg.

Animals are Beautiful People / People are Beautiful Animals

  • Eric Coelho, Mangalore

    Sun, Nov 03 2013

Let us accept the title of this article in its present form than dictate to our liking. I can only say that animals on this earth is god's wonderful creation. If there is earth calamities it is the animals and birds that gives us the first sign of hell. So I would say that the beautiful people on this earth are animals as they are confined and happy with what we human's give them. We cannot keep lion, tigers, leapords, elephant, snakes in our houses but for that we have something with us that the almighty knows that can adjust with humans and i.e., dogs and cats. There are 2 type of animals that sleep for 20 hours a day and i.e., dogs and the politicians. I think the mute animals is far better than the talking animal.

  • Arjun, mangalore

    Sun, Nov 03 2013

@Rachel : Amazed at the way convenience talks! If you're so convinced that dogs are capable of so many myriad emotions then why can't cows, goats n pigs be capable of the same too? Don't they nurture their young too? Don't they respond well to care n love too? There is outstanding proof that says we human beings are best suited to a vegetarian diet, contrary to widespread belief.. This ive love for animals is baffling indeed, love for some, n absolute disregard for others! One question to you, what would you say to people in Korea n some of the eastern states of our country too who consider dogs and cats as their staple diet?

  • Rachel, Mangalore

    Sun, Nov 03 2013

Good article. Although I beg to differ with the person below who said that animals have no emotions. I own four dogs and I have witnessed all kinds of emotions ranging from anger, jealousy, hurt, stubborness, naughtiness and even laziness in my dogs. They are just like humans, with only difference that they cannot talk like humans. Maybe if we could understand their barks, we would know exactly what they want to say.
And no, one does not need to be a vegetarian to love animals. There is a food chain in the world and humans are omnivorous in nature, consuming both plants and animals, and there is nothing wrong with it.

    Sun, Nov 03 2013

@ Eric Coelho.. Did God come personally to you n give you a list about the animals which are made for human consumption n which aren't?! :) When the Christ says 'Thou shall not kill' why is it interpreted as that means only concerning human beings? Isn't the behaviour of animals more than enough to suggest that they value their lives too? Which animal would ever willingly offer itself for slaughter? A poor fish kept out of water too struggles n dies a horrific end.. Try alternate thinking for a change, it's just the lust for taste that attracts one to meat, nothing else. It's totally possible to live a very healthy life by restricting it diet to grains, fruits and vegetables!

There is a saying - To be faithful is canine and to betray is Human. Animals are beautiful but not all of them. The only way to kill your loneliness during your old age is to have Dogs and cats in one's house. They will love you more than Kith and Kin. One does not have to be Veg to love animals. There are certain animals that are created by god for human consumption. I would say in the 60s to 90s every household used to have cows, goats and hens. Cows, goats milk and eggs was considered high proteins for all and the trend since mid 90s has completely changed that we have to depend on outside milk that is at high risk. Even the housewife used to make their own ghee at home and that trend even continues today. Animals have been a loving force whereas human being have been a destructive force.

    Dear Melissa Nazareth,

The Article heading should have been ANIMALS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND LOVELY.

Because animals are not people or humans. Humans are not animals.

A man is a person having body mind and soul.

Animals have no mind and have limited soul.

People may say man came from animal. This discussion is endless and never proven and no witness.

Rest of your Article is alright and appreciable.

:) not at all surprised seeing that retort! Well, Even a 5yrs old child would make out the difference between killing an animal,n say uprooting a bush.. Still, chalo, let's assume that plants do have life, wouldn't it be a far lesser sin then, to indulge in it rather than ruthless animal slaughter? You must be aware about the great quantity of vegetation it takes to feed the various livestock till they're killed for consumption? Btw, any average biology student would tell you without any doubt, that plants don't possess any central nervous system, so no question of feeling 'pain'..

Will surely check out the documentaries, Arjun :) True that change is always good.
I was just thinking about the 'don't plants have life too' argument you mentioned.Though I'm not using it as a counterargument, I beg to differ that it is 'super-stupid'. It's a scientifically proven fact that plants that are emotionally nurtured (spoken to etc) grow better than those that aren't. What if plants feel pain but can't express it as well as animals can just like animals can't express their pain as well as human beings can. What are your thoughts on this?
Hey John, was nice reading and thinking about what you said. You have a completely different view from the below comments interesting! :)

Life is a relay game and it will go on without any hindrance
Love, hate, pain, gain, eat, meet, reproduce are facts of life
Vegetarian or non vegetarian eats the living/dead to survive
Sacrifice and victims are by situation, not by choice/chance
After all living things live by consuming other livings around

It's nice to see your response too. I have to admit not many take it too well, usually retreating too defensive when confronted with the 'meat is murder' logic or resort to the time old 'don't plants have life too' super-stupid arguement! It's obviously not so comforting when we're confronted with a line of thought that so strongly challenges the conventional comfortable one with which we have been brought up, but well, its really fruitful to challenge some age old notions at times and opt to make a difference sometime! :)

Reading it article, you do sound like a real sweet nice human being.. Would really suggest you watch these amazingly informative documentaries, 'Earthlings', 'Meet your Meat', 'Forks over Knives'.. The animal industry there is highly profitable, they don't want us to know the truth.. Do you know that meat and diary are the number one factors for heart disease and cancer in today's world? Switching to a vegetarian diet has been documented to even reverse so many potentially fatal ailments, apart from the numerous other benefits.

Even if you don't hunt yourself, someone else has to do the dirty work of slaughtering the poor creatures right?? Why is it felt that dogs and cats can be pets while hens, lambs, pigs and cows are meant only to be killed and eaten? Don't you think they have feelings too? I was born into a nonvegetarian family, but stopped eating meat in childhood itself,as soon as realization struck that it is totally loaded with cruelty and apathy, the only requisite is some self control over the palate, which isn't that difficult too, considering that lives of helpless poor creatures are at stake!

    Hi Melissa....
It's simple to blame everything on the 'Evolution Theory' in general!
However I think the crux lies in how we have 'evolved' ourselves!
It's a known fact or presumed that each one of us have 'animal or
good instincts' within and it depends which ones we 'harness' and project..Then there are the 'impulses' or the 'momentary lapses' too which happen on lack of awareness.....
Think under such circumstances giving 'excuses' just won't do!

Hey Arjun :) I confess this is one of the ironies of my life and believe me I've thought about it countless number of times. I've even discussed this with a few people that I'm close to. Though today, I've made peace with it I tell myself that we're all animals (evolution theory and all that) and animals kill to survive for instance a lion kills a deer for its food but not for pleasure likewise I eat non vegetarian food but I don't hunt or have caged birds at home.
Hey R. Bhandarkar :) on a lighter note, yes hehe! But like I was telling Arjun, according to evolution theory we're all animals! What do you think?

  • R.Bhandarkar, M'lore
