Dr Subramanian Swamy & Indo-China relations

May 25, 2021

After the Indo-China War of 1962, the relationship between India and China had worsened. No person worked on re-building the relation with Chinese. Chinese had blocked the Kailash Manasarovar and no Indians were allowed to visit for almost 15 years, till the Janata Party government came up in the Centre in 1977 defeating Indira Gandhi, who had declared the Emergency during 1975-76.

But there was one man who had frequent visits to Chinese Embassy and was thinking to build the Indo-China relations. He was mastered in speaking Mandarin (Chinese language) with correct accent, He has well-depth knowledge on Chinese Economy, whose PhD thesis at Harvard titled ‘Economic Growth and Income Distribution in a Developing Nation’ included study of China and Chinese economy and has worked with 2 noble laureates in Economic field Paul A Samuelson and Simon Kuznets. He is none other than Dr Subramanian Swamy.

While the Janata Party government was formed in 1977 in the immediate elections conducted after the Emergency of 1975-76, Morarji Desai had become the Prime Minister. Even though initially Dr Swamy was said to be given ministerial berth, but was blocked by AB Vajpayee due to his jealousy towards Dr Swamy’s growing popularity since his heroic act during the emergency.

But Dr Swamy who had constant touch with Chinese embassy got invitation to visit China as soon as Janata Party government was formed. Vajpayee who was the minister of External Affairs in the cabinet of Morarji Desai, even had objected on this visit of Dr Swamy. But Morarji Desai insisted Dr Swamy to go first, and provided every facility and backup from the Indian Embassy in China. In September 1978, as an envoy of PM Morarji Desai, Dr Swamy visited China on invitation of the prestigious Chinese People’s Institute of Foreign affairs, where he met senior leader Ji Pengfei, this was the first contact between the both countries after 1962 war, which laid stone for building Indo-China relations. From this meeting, Dr Swamy started questioning on reopening of Kailash Manasarovar.

The Janata Party could not continue to govern for more than 2 years since getting into power due to internal clashes, which resulted the then PM Morarji Desai to resign, Charan Singh had become PM with support of Gandhi, which she withdrew after few weeks and in the general elections she came back to power in 1980. But this did not create any hurdles for building the Indo-China relationship.

During this period in 1981, Dr Subramanian Swamy was called by the Chinese for the 3rd time after 1978, this time the invitation was from China’s supreme leader, chairman Deng Xiaoping. In this meeting Dr Swamy discusses on various International topics, border issues and on how deal with the same. In the same meeting he asks chairman Deng to reopen the Kailash Manasarovar route for Hindu pilgrims, which is a Holy site for Hindus. But chairman Deng Xiaoping do not understand the name Dr Swamy quoted, so he confirms the Chinese official name of Kailash Manasarovar and accepts to reopen on the condition that Dr Swamy himself should travel there as a first pilgrim.

Even though Dr Subramanian Swamy was in opposition during Indira Gandhi government, he was successful in opening the Kailash Manasarovar. After this meeting official talks between India and China took place when Chinese minister arrived India. Indian ministers and officials present in the official meet were surprised to hear the Chinese minister insisting in an official meeting that Dr Swamy should be included in the first batch of pilgrims to the Kailash Manasarovar after reopening.

In August that year (1981), Dr Subramanian Swamy led the first batch of pilgrims to Kailash Manasarovar and he revisited there in June 2016 as a guest of the Chinese government.

The entire thing is based on a book by Swamy's wife Roxana Swamy and repeated here. What is the guarantee what Roxana says is true. She will surely support her husband. Or do reveal the source of the material used for writing an article . We dont need copycats

Nice article........S Swamy is the only man with gutts to say that Chinese have occupied and are on Indian territory in recent years and Modi government is misleading the people. I wish he held the posts of either finance or foreign ministry.

Gurudhath S.you have explained interesting things about Dr Subramanian swamy and Indo .china relations. Now we all know china is making efforts to be Nr.one in world..So also I see the connections between India and China with some skepsis.China is making efforts to get in where natural sources are there ,and get them.Have to be very careful to deal with them.connections ja ,but with careful.Trying to get with high tech infos about everything ,and make copies and sell cheaper. So let original countries material less worth.Countries will suffer a great loss .Whereas their country makes a big win.we need not talk here how they treat their workers during their work.Still China is making efforts to get in Kashmir and Jammu.,later slowly in India too. They only smile ,make fotos. We must be always alert to them. They have already made entry in Pakistan.I say keep them hand lang.

Dr. Subramanian Swamy should be sent to China or/and Pakistan as Indian Ambassador to resolve our enmity, ignorance and hate towards our Grate old friends and neighbors. Today China has made itself Super power with its enormous military power, wealth and indisputable influence on world stage & UN. Pakistan has made grate helpful diplomatic and friendly relations with China, USA & other wealthy nations. We Indians are hiding our acute poverty, Our inability to provide basic needs like food, cloth, medicine, oxygen, border security etc,. to our citizens. Under present & previous condition it may be impossible for us to fight & win war with our next door neighbors. We Indians should make peace deal with our neighbors, cut defense budget, cut government spending on propaganda, cut government spending in New Delhi Government complex construction, move Administration out from New Delhi to a new rural location to prevent Delhi smog, bad traffic & bad quality air. Give more powers to states & local governments to manage peoples & welfare programs.

Good presentation by you my dear friend, Mr Gurudath Shetty. Things will workout well, may be not to our individual liking and/or to the very diplomatic liking of our Indian Govt. Our great neighbour, China, is not a Country to accept truthful realities. As you know, no body likes bullying type, dominating always. We Indian populace are always truthful, honest in nature. This being our in-born virtue, an honest dialogue with our counterpart is very very difficult to achieve to bring real meaningful peace. This is my honest submission. Ben D'Souza Prabhu.

Excellent. Thought provoking. Still Dr. Swamy is in the ruling party. What held him back from solving the border dispute with China recently ? Did PM Modi objected him or did PM himself wanted to play the role of Hero? What do you say......... Nor I heard any statement from Dr. Swamy during the stand off at the border between from India and China armies !!

Subrmaniam Swamy is a Qualified individual. He should have been the Finance Minister in the present Government if anyone was able to understand our economic woes, it would be Swamy in the BJP ring. However, he has not used his qualifications, influence and talent in furthering India's image. Got entangled in religious blind beliefs, tried to come of that image, then started criticising everyone who opposed him. Even today, if he takes national interests to his heart and ignores all his opponents - he can serve India well. He was at Harvard and the same man critisized the American Education system? Why did he go there in the first place. He could do a lot to advise the PM how to deal with China. Surely there is a lot of ill will amongst the BJP netas. Yours is a nice article.
