Sultanate of Oman does offer a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure. Visitors come here for the forts, villages, and desert, but they also love the chance to go trekking, camping, cycling, and rock climbing. The variety is what makes Oman such a hidden gem.
And on top of it all, Oman is known for being a safe place to visit. That's a big advantage, especially for families and solo travellers.
Introducing Arun D’Souza, a respected member of our community from Pangla, Shankerpura, the son of late Salvador Dsouza and Agnes Lobo. He's renowned for his active lifestyle and is one of the founders of the esteemed group ‘Adventure Oman’. D’Souza leads expeditions every Friday and Saturday, offering more than 500 members from across India and beyond the chance to explore Oman's diverse landscapes, including hiking, off-road driving, and rock climbing. Revered as the group's leader, he is affectionately known as ‘Captain’ for his guidance. What began as an adventure journey with friends has now evolved into an exciting opportunity for newcomers to join in the thrill.
I had the privilege to discuss Arun Dsouza's experiences in Oman and his adventures with the group.
1. What sparked your interest in adventure activities in Oman?
I got introduced to adventure activities immediately after the addition of my first Jeep Wrangler at the end of the year 2010. Met like-minded people Mohammed Issa, Leader of Guide Oman and Ajay Sikri with similar interests during one of the desert drives organized by Guide Oman. Ajay Sikri introduced me to off-roading & trekking activities and then our group was formed which was named as Adventure Oman in the year 2013. Ajay shifted to Dubai in 2015. AO continued the activities under my leadership and more adventure activities got added such as mountain biking, rock climbing, photography, snorkeling etc.
2. How do you balance your professional responsibilities with your passion for adventure?
AD: Finding the right balance between work and adventure requires meticulous planning and time management. I ensure I fulfil my work commitments while scheduling adventures for weekends and holidays.
3. What difficulties or troubles have you encountered during your adventures, and how did you manage to overcome them?
AD: Learning was a big challenge for me. There's just so much information out there! I overcame it by getting better at sorting things out and understanding what's reliable.
We've battled rough terrain and weather that changes its mind faster than a toddler. But that's where planning comes in - we map it out carefully, work together like a well-oiled machine, and follow safety rules to the letter. Every challenge we overcome makes us a tighter team.
4. Can you share a memorable experience from one of your adventures in Oman?
AD: A moment I'll never forget: There was this epic trek to Jebel Shams, Oman's highest point. The view from the top? Breath-taking. And the feeling of conquering that peak with my team? Unforgettable. It's adventures like that that leave a mark.
5. How has Adventure Oman evolved since its inception, and what are your future plans for the group?
AD: We're also planning even more expeditions to uncover the hidden corners of Oman's wild side. Think epic journeys that'll leave you speechless. But most importantly, we want to build a tight-knit crew of adventure buddies. We want everyone to feel like they're part of a rad adventure fam!
6. What advice would you give to aspiring adventurers looking to explore Oman?
AD: Oman's a playground for adventurers, with adventures for every level. My best advice? Grab every chance you get to explore its crazy-diverse landscapes! From sky-high mountains to secret swimming holes (wadis!), there's a whole world out there waiting to be discovered. Be ready for some challenges – Oman's beauty often comes with a workout.
7. How do you make sure everyone stays safe on your adventures?
AD: Prioritizing your safety, our expeditions feature in-depth safety briefings, essential equipment distribution, and trained guides to navigate potential challenges. We ensure all participants are physically prepared and possess the necessary skills, while clear emergency protocols and communication plans guarantee a well-coordinated response to any unforeseen circumstances.
8. How important are working together and being friends on your adventures?
AD: All working together and being friends makes adventures way more fun! We can help each other out and achieve more as a team. This way emphasizes the enjoyment aspect of teamwork and friendship.
9. What is the most rewarding aspect of leading Adventure Oman?
AD: What I love most about Adventure Oman? Watching people overcome fears, discover amazing things, and become friends for life!
10. Looking ahead, what do you hope to achieve through your adventures in Oman?
AD: I am excited to keep inspiring people to explore Oman's amazing landscapes! We'll have more adventures to help people connect with nature, push their limits, and make memories that last a lifetime!
11. What are the primary advantages or benefits of engaging in adventurous activities such as trekking?
AD: Trekking isn't just fun, it's a health and happiness booster! Strengthen your body, find peace of mind, improve heart health, learn valuable skills, build friendships, discover hidden gems, and immerse yourself in nature.
12. Have you ever faced a situation on an adventure that tested your limits? How did you deal with it?
AD: Adventure Oman swung into action in 2018 during a tough off-roading challenge! Their marshals rescued a group stranded in the desert, running out of water, food, and fuel. This showed how important it is to be prepared and ready to act quickly when things go wrong.
13. Before we conclude, D'Souza, could you share a bit about your current job and your family?
AD: In my current role, I lead the building material business operations across Oman for Mohammed Riaz & Partners LLC as the General Manager. Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to think strategically, and industry knowledge.
My wife Lucy always supports me, and our daughter Avelen's positivity keeps us going strong. Family comes first!
D’Souza, that's awesome to hear about your work and family! Thanks again for taking the time to chat and share your wisdom.
AD: Thank you, Stany. It has been a pleasure engaging in this conversation.
