I am sure by now we have realized that the recently concluded Indian Parliamentary elections have taught us a few lessons for life. That, however high your confidence, spirituality may be, finally your Karma defines what you're. Take the example of our just sworn in Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. While all the major political parties are churning out the process, in evaluating the good or bad results they just encountered with and why they happened that way, we Indians can be happy that we are saved from anarchy and dictatorship thereby upholding the values of Indian democracy. While many politicians may be happy that they will never be bothered by the ED, IT and such constitutional institutions anymore, many will be happy that the rule of law will prevail.
First and foremost, right from the last phase of campaigning till the time the results were announced, we must know that there is a supreme power that governs us all. No living person – however much he can call himself as the creation of supreme powers, the power of the people in a democracy tells us that we are after all the normal human beings in the hands of the Supreme power.
I think it was Abraham Lincoln the 16th president of the US who once said – “You may fool a part of the people some of the time, or you can fool some of them all the time, but you cannot fool all of them all the time?”
So be human, act like one. However able, efficient, spiritual or invincible you are, please understand that you’re only 85%, if you are lucky, else you may be far less in your intelligence.
Who says God punished only Modi or the BJP in these elections? Rather I feel Modi has been saved from the disaster, from hatred and revenge from at least his own people if not from his opponents. Imagine, if the opposition was to come to power, there were chances of national level political vendetta, outrage. Many would have been punched or put behind bar – including Modi - but he has been given a chance to retreat and repent. To work in the interest of all, not just for a few in his close circuit but beyond. I am sure the new coalition government will never again repeat the same mistakes of the past 10 years. Now that two guardian angels have emerged from the side-lines to lead him towards obstinacy and tenacity.
Let’s give Modi a chance as now that the age is catching up. He is no doubt an efficient and effective prime minister until he joins his other colleagues like L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi in the Margadarshak Mandal. Let us give him a chance to tackle our economy, the price rise, to provide employment and to bring a policy to protect our women and children. Let him bring down the cost of gas and the prices of items that we use on a daily basis. I am sure he can do it, he can do it.
Just imagine, if he was elected with an unprecedented margin, say 400 par could we have saved him from revenge and personal vendetta. I think God saved the people of this country, including the opposition who were after his blood.
The other day I was listening to Parakala Prabhakar the well-known economist, thinker and the famous husband of Nirmala Sitharaman. He was being interviewed by my favourite journalist Karan Thapar. Prabhakar said, Modi is not a technocrat, he doesn’t know the middle path, and either he does what comes to his mind or gets it done by hook or crook. In that situation he felt it could be difficult for Modi to lead the coalition. Hence in his opinion, the coalition may fall apart on or before the day of vote of confidence. Modi felt it’s an insult to listen to the opposition – however good their suggestions are -and hates a particular community. He made this very clear during the electioneering but as a prime minister of a country, this was not something expected of him. Perhaps this was he was punished and brought down to size.
Even he said, during the campaigning, Modi only sold the brand ‘Modi’ and hardly spoke about the BJP or their plans for the future development of this great nation. He extensively spoke about Hindutva, a topic that pushed him hard below his belt. Even Lord Ram or Ayodhya could save him in spite of a grand temple built Lord Ram's honour.
The senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor who secured his seat from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, said, “Till yesterday, he was talking about becoming the third time Prime Minister but see how destiny pushed him to be the 1/3rd Prime Minister after Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar in both the sides.”
Talking about TDP president Chandrababu Naidu, I am reminded that no matter what knocks you down in life, get back and keep going, never give up, great blessings are the result of great perseverance. This is what exactly happened with the stalwart politician. Let's get back for a while to 2019 to see how a seasoned politician and a contemporary of then Chief Minister, Y S Rajasekhara Reddy came on the ground and lost to senior Reddy's 46 year old son, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy.
During the past 5 years, he Chandrababu was humiliated, dumped and punished, even his pet project Amaravati was being shelved and his bungalow in the area was crushed and he was made ‘homeless and hopeless’.
But he rose like a phoenix to be called the ‘King Maker’ of Indian politics. Not only is he being projected as the next Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh but a formidable leader at the national level.
Anyone remembers Sashikanth Senthil? Let’s follow the story published in the Daijiworld news portal. Once the deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada and a Congress candidate, Shashikant clinched victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
A suave Dalit face, born in extreme poverty and who finished his education by swimming against the tides won the race to become the Member of Parliament from the Tiruvallur Constituency, defeating his opponent with more than 35,688 votes. At the same time, in the same state, K Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP president who was once the Police Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi district suffered defeat in the Coimbatore Constituency.
This is called destiny and the game of the invisible power that rules us all.
Will the future be all fine and pink for Modi and his NDA coalition? No, say the political analysts who are good in reading the writings on the wall.
“Mind you, Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar are not that soft politicians who love to kiss the children and move ahead. They mean business. Prosperity and development of their own state is on top of their mind else both of them have the power to jeopardise the coalition," says Parakala Prabhakar.
Even Modi's diehard fan and sympathiser Prashant Kishor, the great political strategist who unsuccessfully predicted the results of recent elections has forseen some danger to the coalition.
“Unless the BJP wins two out of 3 forthcoming assembly elections in Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra, the coalition will lose its way. There are chances of each one of them walking away from the clutches of the BJP,” he says.
Before concluding, may I reproduce what the former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan said while analysing the results. He not only praised the ‘wise’ Indian voters for electing a strong Opposition in the Lok Sabha elections 2024 but also defined the Lok Sabha election results as a win-win situation for Indian democracy and the economy. Further, he said regardless of who forms the government, India has elected a strong opposition that would force the government to change course.
Should we then call this as Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas and Sabka Vishwas.
