Growing up, I would play 'teacher' with my toys, mimicking the scene of my mom evaluating papers at the kitchen table. At that time, I didn't grasp the full impact of her role. It wasn't until I visited her school that I saw the true scope of her influence. Students eagerly rushed to greet her, their excitement, evident just to catch a glimpse of her. It was a revelation.
As I grew older, I witnessed firsthand the stress and effort that came with her profession. Yet, my mom never wavered in her dedication. What struck me was how, even outside the classroom, former students would approach her, introducing themselves with a warmth that spoke volumes about her impact.
My mom’s teaching approach has always been distinctive. Unlike many, she never emphasized rote learning. Instead, she made lessons engaging through creative methods like correlation and friendly competition. Her innovative strategies have not only made learning enjoyable for her students but have deeply inspired me.
Starting her career in October 1998 in a private institute and later transitioning to a government position, my mom initially didn’t see teaching as her first choice. Yet, over the years, she embraced it with growing passion and love. Her unique approach has created magical experiences in her classroom.
The real challenge came during the COVID-19 pandemic. I watched as she adapted to new methodologies and interactive tools, demonstrating an incredible commitment to her students. Her ability to innovate and stay passionate in the face of adversity is truly inspiring.
My grandmother, Lucy Monteiro, also a devoted teacher, has been a guiding light and a source of inspiration for my mom. Her career in education provided the foundation and motivation for my mom’s journey, embodying the same passion and dedication that has characterized my mom's approach to teaching. Together, their legacy reflects a deep-rooted commitment to fostering learning and making a positive impact on their students' lives
Now, after nearly 26 years in the profession, my mom, Pramila Olivia Monteiro, has not only imparted knowledge but has also inspired a love of learning in her students. Her innovative teaching methods have turned challenges into opportunities, fostering a dynamic and engaging classroom environment. Beyond her teaching role, she has actively contributed to the community, participating in local educational initiatives and mentoring young educators.
Although my mom has never taught me in a classroom setting, she has been my mentor, guiding me and nurturing my talents. Her life has shown me that teaching extends beyond the classroom—it’s a part of every aspect of life. My mom often says, 'Once you’re in the water, you have to learn to swim.’ It’s a powerful reminder of resilience and dedication."
As we celebrate Teachers' Day today, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for my mom's remarkable journey. Her dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment have shaped the lives of her students and inspired those around her, including me. Her approach to teaching, marked by creativity and empathy, has made a lasting impact on the community.
On this special day, I honor her 26 years of devoted service and the countless hours she has spent nurturing young minds and fostering a love of learning. Her influence reaches far beyond the classroom, embodying the true essence of what it means to be a teacher.
To my mom, Pramila Olivia Monteiro, and to all educators who dedicate their lives to shaping the future, I extend my heartfelt thanks and admiration. Your tireless efforts and boundless compassion make a world of difference.
Today, we celebrate your extraordinary contributions and the profound impact you have on our lives.
Happy Teachers' Day!
