Bengaluru, Dec 19: Government of Karnataka is studying a proposal to ban the use of mobile phones in temple premises in lines with state of Tamil Nadu which is going to implement the same after a Madras High court verdict.
Officials of the Hindu Religious Institutions And Charitable Endowments Department are holding discussions on the subject after receiving appeals from many devotees. It is said that a decision to this effect will be taken after the winter session of Assembly.
A senior officer said that the usage of mobile phones in temples has increased after E-Hundis were started during Covid-19 pandemic. Temples like Tirumala does not allow the use of mobile phones.
Officials of Hindu Religious Institutions And Charitable Endowments Department said, “Many who have appealed to ban use of mobile phones in temples are of the opinion that ring tones of mobiles are causing disturbance during poojas. Many people click photos putting their back to the sanctum sanctorum. By allowing this kind of mobile usage in temple premises there are possibilities of sending wrong signals to those who visit temples. Along with prohibiting the use of mobile phones in temples, there should be provision to keep the mobile phones in safe custody in temples before entering the temple.”
Meanwhile, department commissioner Rohini Sindhuri said that no decision has been arrived at as of now and only discussions are in progress.
