Kolkata, May 28 (IANS) Japanese motorbike manufacturer Yamaha's India subsidiary Saturday said it is aiming to double its bike sales to 500,000 units this year.

"We are aiming to sell 5 lakh bikes this year. We are targeting to sell 3.5 lakh bikes in the country and 1.5 lakh will be exported," the company's chief executive officer and managing director Hiroyuki Suzuki told reporters here.

"Last year, a total of 2.5 lakh bikes were sold," he said.

He said that the company had products in all the five segments - premium, deluxe, basic, executive and standard.

"We are currently concentrating on deluxe segment in which we have 14 percent market share," he added.

The company, which has a portfolio of 13 models, has a two percent market share across the segments in India.

The company has two manufacturing plants in the country - in Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh and in Faridabad, Haryana.

Stating that total production capacity of the two plants was five lakh units, Suzuki said the capacity will be increased to six lakh units next year with an investment of $10 million.

The company is also likely to launch scooters in the country by next year.

"We need some study to launch scooters in India. It will be locally manufactured," Suzuki added.
