New Delhi: Compulsory Year-long NCC Stint for Youth?

New Delhi, June 9 (IANS) Members of Parliament have asked the defence ministry to make it compulsory for school and college students to undergo a yearlong training stint with the National Cadet Corps (NCC), a government-sponsored quasi-military youth movement.

At a meeting of the parliamentary consultative committee on defence here Wednesday, the parliamentarians, cutting across party lines, urged the government to bring about changes in the structure and training content of the NCC and Sainik Schools -- military schools imparting conventional education up to secondary level.

"Some members suggested that participation in NCC by every youth of the country for at least one year in their academic life be made compulsory so that discipline and societal values are absorbed by them," a defence ministry release said.

The meeting was chaired by Defence Minister A.K. Antony and Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallam Raju was present.

The MPs felt that there was need to bring large number of the country's youth into the framework provided by the NCC and Sainik Schools "so that they imbibe sound values and become worthy citizens" of the future, the release said.

There was unanimity among the MPs that contemporary societal requirements such as IT, disaster management and strong leadership traits must form part of the training and education in NCC and Sainik Schools.

In his opening remarks, Antony told the committee that NCC remains in the forefront of social and community development programmes and its cadets provided timely assistance during natural and manmade disasters and accidents such as the Jnaneshwari Express tragedy in Jhargram in West Bengal in June last year.

Recalling the growth of NCC over the years, Antony said the youth outfit, established in 1948, has a sanctioned strength of 1.5 million cadets at present and its activities extend to 615 districts across the country.

Talking about the Sainik Schools, the defence minister said the schools had entered their golden jubilee year and at present there were 24 such schools in the country.

"Over the past 50 years, Sainik Schools have prepared over 8,000 officers for the armed forces and have also made a substantial contribution to other walks of life," he added.

Pallam Raju told the committee that the government was "attaching a lot of importance" to the two systems and more support is being given to them.

I am very much happy with this. Good Job for taking this initiative. Students need to learn Discipline, Time management, How to respect and obey elders, to contribute essential needs in the Country by serving the society.

The best part which can mold a student's life is Punishments, Which are very severe.

I am a EX-NCC NAVY CADET, Was trained by Army, Navy and Airforce specially for Rifle drills,Participated in many camps and activities in INDIA. I have taken part in ALL INDIA REPUBLIC DAY CAMP, NEW DELHI -2006. Also had an opportunity meeting and partying with ADMIRAL of the Fleet Indian Navy-Admiral Arun Prakash, Chief Ministers and Governors of Karnataka and Goa in 2006, Also other VIPS of the country.

I Wish all the best to the Indian Government. And all parents to encourage their children.

    HUM SAB BHARATHIYA HAI

Compulsory NCC stint a good one...but before that it should be made compulsory "military training" for all minsiters...look at our armed comrade's families who have lost their bread earners in the fight against terror and war...these ministers are worse than terror groups...

Nice move by the govt. Even I was NCC air wing cadet in PUC. Have flown a Rohini Glider in Bajpe airport. Quite scary in bajpe airport but gave us lots of thrills. One sortie will cost a big amount if you do privately. Plus had opportunity to shoot in double barrel, 303's, revolver. Also lots of camps n fun. But the best part is discipline NCC gives. Jai Hind!!!

This is a good move from the Govt. of India as it is very much needed for every citizen of India. We lag patriotism, discipline & honesty towards our mother land. These things need to educate our young minds at the early stage of their schooling. Beside this we need to have a separate curriculum in their schooling about moral responsibility towards society and so on. So that when they grow-up let them have a superior quality, educate & act as a responsible citizen.

Really commendable decision. Should be accepted by all Youth of this country. I was in N.C.C and did complete "C" certificate, attended many camps (of which Army attachment camp with Maratha Regiment- Belgaum has really made me to know the plight of our soldiers guarding this country by risking their life. These training really changed me both mentally, physically and my whole life being desciplined with what I do whether in my work place or at home. It cultivated the habit of regular excersice which every one has to do. All the best to all youth of this country.

This is a very good move. I was NCC naval cadet for 5 yrs, 3 yrs in high school and 2 yrs in College.
If it is one year compulsory, then ideal might be 9th std and 11th std students as 10th and 12th std students require to study for Public examination and demands more time study for the students to achieve better results.
Any how very good decision by the defence. This will instill the desire with the youth to serve our motherland.

Excellent move by the govt, it will give some descipline to the youth, more over it is better to make five year's of Millitary service compulsory for all the able bodied men which will make a person more diciplined.
