Mangaluru, Mar 2: The Kasargod police have arrested the prime suspect in the murder case at a jewellery shop in Hampankatta.
The accused has been identified as 30-year-old Shifaz, a resident of Kozhikode.
Under the direction of Kasargod SP Dr Vaibhav Saksena , DYSPs C A Abdul Rahim, P K Sudhakaran, Kasargod town station SI M Vishnuprasad, Civil police officers Nijin Kumar, Rajesh Kattamballi, Sujith, Sajish and driver Cheriyan caught the culprit.
The Mangaluru police department in its statement said, “One Raghavendra Acharya, an employee at a shop by name Mangalore Jewellers was murdered by an unknown person. The owner of the shop informed the police that some of the items from the shop are missing. The suspect was seen on the CCTV camera of the nearby shop.
“Multiple teams were made to check CCTV footages, to analyse the tower dump data and to check various lodges and hotels, also to check on suspects with same modus operandi.
“The suspect's movement was traced to Kasargod with the help of CCTV camera footage. The CCTV camera footages of the suspect were widely published throughout Karnataka and Kerala.
“On March 2, a tip-off information regarding the suspect and in a joint operation with Kasargod district police, the suspect was secured in Kasargod. After detailed enquiry until late night suspect has confessed the crime.
“The accused has committed murder with intention of robbery. He had gone back to his native place Kozhikode and was absconding since then.
“Today, he came to Kasargod with the same intention as he was found to be wearing multiple layers of clothes when secured.
"Shifaz (30) is from Kozhikode. He had worked in Dubai from 2014 to 2019. He had got into a private college in Mangaluru for BE diploma in mechanical engineering and left the course mid-way after two years.
“The accused would be produced in court on March 3 and we will seek his custody for further investigation,” stated the statement.
