Stranded for Four Days at Kuwait Airport, Passengers Narrate Ordeal

Kuwait, Jun 18 (Mumbai Mirror): Passengers of Kuwait Airways will not forget the four days they were forced to spend at the airport for a long time to come.

Over 150 passengers were stranded at Kuwait airport for four days after several flights to Mumbai were cancelled.

The passengers, mostly Indians, were flying in from different destinations and were scheduled to board the connecting Kuwait Airways flights to Mumbai.

The stranded passengers have complained to the Consulate General of Kuwait in Mumbai and Kuwait Airways that they were discriminated against during their wait in Kuwait.

“I was returning from New York on June 11 and was supposed to take a connecting flight to Mumbai on Monday. When we had queued up to board the plane, we were told that our flight to Mumbai has been cancelled.

The next six hours were the worst time of our lives,” said an affected passenger Dr Nimesh Shah.

Another passenger Sangeeta Vengsarkar complained that the ground staff was extremely rude. “Two hours after the flight was cancelled we got restless and some of us started asking questions to the airport authorities. They just kept telling us to ‘shut up and stand quietly,” she said.

The passengers were in for a bigger shock when they discovered that there were around 100 other Indians at the airport who had been stranded for three days. “We were all supposed to take connecting flights to Mumbai.

Some of us were headed to Mumbai from Frankfurt, JFK, and other destinations. However, on day one we were told that the flight was cancelled due to technical snag,” said a passenger who was headed to Mumbai from Frankfurt.

Several passengers have now come together and sent complaints to Kuwait Airways as well as Consulate General of Kuwait in Mumbai.

In their letter they have alleged racism. “Americans who were on our flights were accommodated at Sheraton, a five star, while after six hours of wait at the airport, we were accommodated in a three star.

During our six-hour wait at the airport, we kept asking for water or something to eat, but in vain. Your duty manager was rude to us.

The worst of the lot was an officer posted at gate 23 who said that he was in charge and all Indians going to Mumbai should stay put on one side till further instructions.

The language and behaviour of other officers towards senior citizens was atrocious, to say the least,” states the letter.

The passengers have pointed out that those who had to stay back for four days, were ferried to the airport every day in the morning and made to wait for hours. “Every day for four days we were told that the plane would finally take off.

On June 10, we were taken as far as the runway. However, an hour later we were brought back to the airport and told that the flight was cancelled due to technical snag. When one of us got anxious and questioned the authorities, the airport officer told the man to keep quiet or face arrest,” states the letter.

On June 12, the passengers got to know that the Americans who were with them on flight from New York on June 11, had all left for Mumbai in an early morning flight.

“What do you call this if not racism? Why keep us in lower grade hotels and Americans in five stars? Why pack them off earlier in the first flight available while we were left behind?” questions the angry letter.

It was only late on June 12 that they were all packed into a flight and brought to Mumbai. Ever since then the passengers, galvanised by their shared nightmare, have been networking and have now sent the letter.

When Mumbai Mirror contacted Kuwait Airways’ Mumbai office, the sales manager, in-charge of the office said he had no clue about the issue.

“Our headquarter may be dealing with the complaint. However since Friday and Saturday are holidays in Kuwait, we won’t be able to find out anything,” said the manager. Consulate General of Kuwait’s office also refused to comment on the issue.

What's wrong to look for cheaper flights. Are international carriers are graded and guaranteed against such incidents. Can anyone guarantee that if you pay more, you will not be inconvenienced. Does Kuwait airway is not governed by international laws? do cheap flights only crashes, what kind of logic is being given for the heck of it.

I was travelling from JFK via Kuwait to Mumbai and were among those with my family stranded at Kuwait. During our 'confinement' no airline official came to us and explained. when people questioned them, they called Police and asked to surrender passports. It was high handed behavior, completely disrespecting international protocols. Worst was when in the middle of night, we were taken in bus to the aircraft, aircraft staff refused us permission and we were kept in the bus for about 45 to 50 minutes. Bus was diverted back, but no one bothered to open the door. Women and children started thumping at glass panes, officials looked other way.

We were treated as 'prisoners'. While waiting at cramped door no.21, locals jeered at us with 'unprintable' remarks. While we were languishing, Americans were given alternate flights and flew away. We wondered whether it was all 'Indian' passengers. While we were put up in shabby hotel, they were put up in Sheraton. We tried to contact indian conuslate, a guy named Sanjay verma responded but never came to airport for our rescue. We were left at our mercy and were being paid the price of being an indian. My wife is undergoing treatment for the last seven days and i have huge medical bill to foot. Are we electing Govt for scams and frauds only. Are we paying taxes for swindlers and looters. There is no response from Govt so far. No wonder we have a foreign Minister who can deliver wrong speech at UN. Kuwait airways deserved to be banned.

Absolutely racism. These other countries behave discrimatrly and have a very different attitude towards indians and asians in particular. They dont know that their kuwait airways suppose to fly to mumbai and other parts in indiais running just because of our indians not americans.how can they put us down like this. After a few years from now on many of our people would not opt not working in gulf and then we will see how they salute our indians. These gulf countries depend on our skilled services and cannot go without it.

Kuwait Airways officials seem to have forgotten the fact that their airline is surviving mainly due to the Asian routes, particularly Mumbai, Chennai & Kochi. Just cancel these routes and see where Kuwait Airways stand.

As echoed by many-the behaviour of Arabs is rude towards Asians.
To top it all the counters(immigration) are always manned by illiterate -only -Arabic knowing officers-who just doesn't understand any other language-however hard you try to communicate-They (short-tempered) YELL at you in loud Arabic expletives.
Solution- Appoint educated, well mannered personnel at counters where the countries they represent, when vistiors land & take off & the impressions last life time about that country.

I heard the treatment given to the subcontiment pessengers in kuwait airways always been very bad and the airlines staff are very arrogant and rude. i do not know why people still travel with kuwait air is it because of little cheaper fare or not getting any other airlines to fly it is big question. We have to boycot the airlines totally. My son once travel to US in kuwait air and he suffered a lot because of the staff treat the passenger like criminals. cos they have petrol money.

Its natural everywhere in the world about racism...specailly indians are more victim of it . the reason is no support from our Embessys or ministers.our ministers bussy with their politics and making money.. only they say india shining, india growing..specailly in ARAB /MIDDLEEAST countrys think indian are labour .poor....and also due to some of our indian people showing them that we are uneducated with their own attitudes..

I do agree that irrespective of any condition, passengers should be treated fairly and with equality by any airline ferrying them.

That being said however, please let us not forget that Kuwait Airways is nothing more than a budget airline masquerading as the real thing. For the lack of comparable service, the only reason why people choose to fly KU are the suspiciously low fares especially to India from the US and London.

I do beleive it is no secret that you ultimately get what you pay for. This should be primary information when flying an airline like KU.

    What MR. MAURICE QUADRAS said
is quite very common in the gulf
    regions. Some countries in the
region are far better than their
    next door neighbours in treating
the Asians. From my own experience
    of visiting the gulf countires,
the SULTANATE OF OMAN and the
    UAE are standing in better
    positions while dealing with the
    Asians as a whole.

On the way back to the U.S., I made a short stop in a Gulf
    country. While waiting in line,
one Indian citizen was in front me. Even though he was educated
    and well dressed, the
custom officer was very rude to him. Then I followed him with my
U.S. passport, and he was very
courteous to me. Indeed, I was
    greatly surprised by the attitude
    change of the customs officer.

It's a fact that people of this so called 'emerging super power' are treated like trash not only in an alien land but on our own soil some times, when it comes to dealing with whites and our own countrymen, may be as a result of two hundered years of slavery which has remained deeply rooted in the blood.

Such kind of incident that also 4 days stranding @ Kuwait Airport is certainly strange and unprecedented.
It brought my past experience in the same Airport some years back, when Air INDIA flight to Mumbai rescheduled to next day, even after obtaining B.Pass,AI management asked us to report next day.But I had organised a meeting of several Mumbai bound AI passengers and collectively held sit in strike which yielded HOLIDAY INN accommodation for all stranded AI passengers.

Here what went wrong for days unbelievable and KUWAIT AIRWAYS has to pay compensations those stranded passengers.IATA has to take note of the very strange and unpleasant incident of KUWAIT AIRWAYS need to deliver justice to the victims.

When people travel from Western countries they feel such incidence are insulting, humiliated becasue so much freedom of speech, act available here. Mumbai airport customs officails are do the same harrasment so we have little choice to eliminate corruptions. If these incidence happens in western countries people will sue them. Best bet is sue Kuwait Airways for these harrasment becasue it is a Int'l carrier.

Kuwair Airways is known for their un-friendliness towards Asians. They threat the whites with great respect even people with the least profesional qualaties. Any white is more important than an Indian genius. Our politicians do not have this problem as they have a different status/channels. Our rich buisnessmen have their wealth to pave their way arround. Who cares ? It is only the humble people who suffer. We are to be blamed as we have elected these politicians.

This is common now with all airlines during peak holiday season. What airlines do is that they over sell cheap tickets on internet and start filling their flights with first priority to high cost tickets. You can still buy a ticket across the counter and board the flight same day. First priority they give to higher paid passengers and others who bought cheap tickets months ahead end up waiting and seeing at their confirmed flight taking off without them. I experienced this twice from Bahrain. Last time I insisted the Gulf Air officer on duty at Bahrain airport to give it in writing. They did the same thing with my other friends. We experience similar thing while leaving Mumbai. Airlines lure cheap tickets holders with hotel accommodation and boarding the next day.
