Bangalore, Jun 23: With the Karnataka High Court asking the State Government to enhance the retirement age of College Lecturers from the present 60 to 65 years as per the UGC Regulations, 2010, the State Government has decided to challenge the decision on the ground that the retirement age for all government servants in the State shall remain at 60 years.
Enhancing the retirement age for College Lecturers alone from 60 to 65 years would be unfair to the Government employees, said Higher Education Minister Dr V S Acharya, pointing out that the step might lead to agitations from the Government employees for a similar increase.
The age of retirement for all government servants in the State would remain at 60 years. The Government was against enhancing the age of retirement of its employees from the present 60 years, he said.
“Our view is clear and all our government employees’ retirement age is 60 years,” he said.
The State government has fixed age of retirement of college teachers at 60 yeas. The retirement age of teachers of working in universities is fixed at 62 years.
In fact, the Yeddyurappa regime has increased the retirement age of government employees from 58 to 60 years in 2009.
Dr Acharya said the Government would challenge the court’s verdict by filing a writ petition in the court.
The Gulbarga bench of the Karnataka High Court had recently given the verdict fixing the age of retirement of college lecturers at 60, the Minister said.
