Bangalore: Over 6,000 Youth Participate in ICYM's 'Rise and Shine'

Bangalore, Jul 19: The Indian Catholic Youth Movement, Bangalore organized 'Rise and Shine for a Better World', a one-day Youth Convention at the Palace Grounds here on Sunday July 17.

A mammoth congregation of 6,000-plus youth danced sang, prayed and swayed to the glorious sounds of music and promised to 'Rise and Shine' to make this world and their church a better place for all. The Archdiocesan youth director, Fr Divya Paul in his address to the youth said, "India as a country has the largest population of youth, and by 2020 India's average age range will be 25 to 30, if that is what it is, the implications are many, most importantly - that what we invest in the youth of today will influence the destiny of families, society, the church and the country, and the investments are worth the effort."

The guest of honour at the inauguration Ronald Colaca said, "We Christians have the right to live with dignity and pride," and added “Do not be afraid to fight for it. Be united even as the world tries to divide you, in the name of religion, language, caste, colour and creed."

He asked the youth how many of them want to be doctors and engineers and a good number of them raised their hands. Then he asked how many of them would like to be politicians, to which hardly two or three responded. Finally, he asked how many want to become IAS/IPS/IRS/KAS but no one raised a hand.

On the response of the students, Colaco said, 'Due and adequate representation of Christian community in all three important pillars of democracy that is, politics, administration and judiciary is very important in the present social climate. If we build up adequate representation in these three key areas, we can solve our problems ourselves and ensure no one does any injustice to us."

To enourage the youth to take up administrative streams, he announced an assistance of Rs one lac each for twenty meritorious students, totally a sum of Rs 20 lac, for necessary training for IAS/KAS/IRS/IPS this year.

He appreciated the services of missionaries, priests and nuns in education, health and social sectors which have brought name and fame to the community inspite of its 2.25% presence in India and 4% in Karnataka.

He said it was the duty of ICYM-moulded youth to protect Christian institutions and the religion. Colaco expressed concern over the fact that ICYM-moulded leaders are not being found in areas of social leadership, politics and during times of crisis like church attacks.

He explained how he could support gram panchayat and other election candidates in Mangalore, Udupi and Karwar districts who have succeeded at the local levels. He asked the youth to follow the same in IAS/KAS exams.

He also thanked chief minster B S Yeddyurappa for forming the Christian Development Board in the state.

The governor of Karnataka H R Bhardwaj said that youth in modern India had a great responsibility of not only contributing to the development of the country, but also ensuring that the freedom and unity that our forefathers fought for were not disrespected and discarded in selfish politics that could destroy us. In order to do this, he reminded the leaders of the church and society that it was important to guide the youth and ensure that they were on the right track. "It is our responsibility to make sure that our youth are properly guided, because the future of our society lies in their hands," he said, adding that conventions such as this would go a long way in accomplishing the task.

Archbishop of Bangalore, Dr Bernard Moras, who graced the convention, said that "this is the time for youth to rise above all pettiness and evils, to stand tall and shine forth."

The national directors of ICYM Fr Alywn D'Souza and the newly-appointed national youth director Fr Franklin D'Souza were also the guests of the day and were honoured for their service and leadership to the Catholic Youth Movement.

The entire day with numerous talks, themed dances, skits, choreographies, singing and dancing made it an enjoyable, soul searching and enlightening day for all the youth who attended. They returned home proud to be an Indian Catholic Youth. The Archdiocesan Youth Commission thanked all sponsors and donors who made this day possible.

mr.colaco, justice Saldhana and Diocese of mangalore have common interest to uplift the community and work for it. However it appears that dioceses of mangalore shows favour to some politicians instead of bringing all the people who have common interst in developing our society. The mangalore diocese may please stop favouritisum and division of socity by favouring politicians.

It is sad to note that not a single budding youth . showed interest in civil services.God bless you abundantly for sponsoring 20 youths take up the challenge to become civil servants with financial support to get best coaching. There is to make small christian community to spearhead the movement. One of the agenda of the SCC should be to motivate the youngsters of the area to see light of the day and respond to it. Only civil services, politics and entreprenuership can bring glory to the community and in turn the society.

The Indian Catholic Youth Movement strengthens young Catholics, gives them hope, joy and self confidence and organised a wonderful gathering called "'Rise and Shine for a Better World' in Bangalore. 6000 young Catholics attended, they prayed, worshipped and listened to various speeches.
India as a country has the largest population of youth and Fr Divya Paul is right when he says "that what we invest in the youth of today will influence the destiny of families, society, the church and the country, and the investments are worth the effort."
Young Buddhists, Catholics, Hindus have the chance to create a better India therefore is it so important that young people receive a qualified education.
The Father of the Nation GANDHI had a dream for all Indians. Will this dream come true?
I hope and believe in this dream. That one day all Indians should be able to lead a dignified life even for the poorest of the poor.
Much has been done up to now but a lot must be done for the future.
The Indian Catholic Youth Movement represents India´s Catholic Youth and all members shall be inspired to work for a better India and to look after the poor and to see the need of the poor.
The poorest of the poor have the right to lead a life in dignity and to receive skills to be able to earn a livelihood and The Indian Catholic Youth Movement can make a contribution to fulfil the dream for a better world.

    Best regards

Indeed a wonderful article. 6000 Catholic young people gathered in Bangalore to get strength for a Christian life and to work for a better future for all.
The Catholic Church of India offers much help to give young people a good education and is doing a lot in the social field.
Christians are a minority in India but The Indian Catholic Youth Movement shows the way for a better world where all can live a life in dignity.

I would like to congratulate The Indian Catholic Youth Movement on organising "Rise and Shine for a Better World" a one-day Youth Convention in Bangalore.
Around 6000 young people gathered, they prayed, worshipped and danced and they got the feeling that Jesus is among them.
There are only 2.25percent Christians in India but they have been playing an important role in education and in social fields and Christians have done so much for the poor and the poorest of the poor in India.
All should be done to promote young Christians and enable to give them a qualitative education.
That will help them to make this world and India a better place for all.
There shall be an adequate representation of Christian community in all three important pillars of democracy (politics, administration and judiciary).

By 2020 India's average age range will be 25 to 30 and one can see and comprehend that young Christians will have the opportunity to influence and to form characters, attitudes and habits of young people by participating and working in politics, administration, judiciary, education, social fields.
It should go without saying that young Christians work for a better world with chances for all for a better future and look after the poorest of the poor.
We all shall work for a better world.
6000 young people can be proud to be an Indian Catholic Youth.

    Best regards

"The sins of youth are paid for in
    old age" Latin proverb.

"Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is
    renwed like the eagle's".
    Psalms 103:5.

" There is a feeling of Eternity
in youth which makes us amends for
everything. To be young is to be
    as one of the immortals".
    William Hazlitt.

The destiny of India is determined
through the proper focusing and vision of the young generation.
When these 6000 youths are totally
    dedicated and march forward with
    a selfless and CHRIST-centered
attitude in lifting the weak and
wiping the tears of the crying
people when they smile at their
    neighbours and enemies it can
create a revolution of peace and
    prosperity in India.

See the impact created by one
person MR. RONALD COLACO in the
State of Karnataka to bring peace
and harmony among all people and
to guide the youths in the proper
direction. I pray that GOD may
    raise many such kind-hearted
visionaries all over India. MAY GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
