Udupi, Jul 25: In a shocking incident, the body of a baby boy was found in a drain near Kasturba Medical Store, Manipal, here on Monday July 25.

The body surfaced in the rainwater from the drain on Monday morning.

The baby seemed to be a newborn as the cord was still attached. The cause of his death is not yet known.

It is yet to be ascertained as to how the body came to be there or who the parents are.

Locals who gathered at the spot speculated that the baby may have been born dead.

Police arrived at the spot and shifted the body after conducting preliminary investigations. Manipal police have registered a case in this regard.

More details awaited.

    @ Jossey Saldanha,
it was an incident by which the foetus has surfaced from the drain, Baby death due to natural reasons/ foetal terminations are always handed to the family members, and is done with the consent of the family in all Hospitals, do you mean to say that the Hospital authorities flushed it down the drain with the permission of the parents? Kindly think before accusing statements and pointing at someone. Let the police do their job, and the doctors do theirs, they are not responsible for the incident.

Agreed, it is ghastly. But before jumping into conclusions (like other commenters in this post), here are some observations about the report:
    1. The "Baby" is a foetus of approx 4 months. Does not qualify to be called as a newborn. Investigation alone would reveal further info.(whether it is a product of medical termination/ illegal abortion/museum specimen etc).
    2. The "baby" surfaced in the drain on the side of State Highway. I don`t see any reason in dragging the name of the hospital in the vicinity.
    3. Police have their procedures, before shifting the "piece of evidence". If we don`t know their protocols, better not to comment on it.
    4. Media too has more time and resources to spare on such news than the plight of living children like malnutrition, homeless children, child labour...and i guess the national media with their OB vans would have been in Manipal, if it would have been a female foetus!

Anant Shenvi, r u the official spokesperson for karnataka police. what do you mean someone should build a memorial. what the commentators are telling if it makes sense to you is that firstly child hould not have been lying in such a condition secondly the child should have been handled with care and not ignored even after it was seen, the pics speak everything just see and write.

please dont comment unneccesarily on police or any public authority. They know their work. They are also having their superiors, they advise them. If you were so adamant, you had to go there and build one memorial. All Indians just poke their nose in other issues, which they are not concerned.

Absolutely inhuman way of treating a newborn - be it alive or not. May his soul R.I.P.
The mother of child needs to come forward & take responsibility for whatever has happened.
The strangest part of this incident is - the cops at the site. The traffic is still moving within a few feet of the spot.
The cop who is measuring the baby is an Assistant Sub-Inspector & the cop walking by is a Sub-Inspector (as per the Indian State Police Non-Gazetted Officer Rank Insignia or ranks) & most of these sub inspectors are directly recruited into the police as they have better educational qualifications than lower-ranking police officers.
Just look at them, do they look qualified enough to handle these situations?
Last week a person died on the streets of M'lore & for hours the cops had no clue as to what their role is or what has to be done. The head of the Police force in M'lore needs to take some serious steps in educating these cops & also conduct training workshops on first aid, emergencies etc.
    GOD BLESS INDIA

Bizarre incident and total apathy on the part of Mangalore Police.
Do our police have any RULE BOOK?
    1. Look at the police inspector pass by looking at the body. At the first instance he should have pulled out a clean white cloth or at least his hand kerchief and covered the body.
    2. What was the need to take measurements and inspect the body in the drain? This could have been done after shifting the body to a hospital or morgue.
    3. Do the police now know what to do next or how to handle this sort of investigation?
    4. Last Sunday a person died on the streets of Mangalore. For 3 hours police did not know what to do.
    5. I have one observation. How does Mangalore Police become very efficient when it comes to taking action only against a particular community?
Dr. V.S.Acharya & Dr. Kiran Acharya, custodians of Manipal – Integrity of Manipal and Kasturba Medical Hospital is at stake. Can you tell us what action you guys have taken?

Police traning system in India needs total revamp in an urgent basis.Police do not have any qualities as human being to treat people. They know only beating , drinking ,taking bribe.Sometime it is dangerous for woman to walk near police station at night . I am not against Indian system ,but comparing to many countires we have one of the worst dept. The country where I leave the police are friendly & very helpful.

How unprofessional Police Dept., handling a human being when thrown into roadside, cannot imagine why they are not trained in this situation. I could see they examine the body as an animal. Police Dept., certainly need to educate themselves to handle humans with love and care. Thanks to Daijiworld bringing this to public attention.

How inhuman? How can a woman do this? Whats happening to the women around the globe especially Indians.

If you cannot take care of a newborn please refrain yourselves from getting pregnant.

Please teach MORAL EDUCATION in schools rather than just science, maths etc Humanity comes first. What good is your education if one has no moral values.

PARENTS PLEASE TEACH YOUR YOUNG ONES TO RESPECT LIFE IN ALL FORMS.

Remember your a failure not only in life but in front of god.

May his soul rest in peace. It's so sad, how can some one throw it on road side, if it was alive, they would have done the same? No heart. If the parents are chistians they need to offer a mass for its soul, so that baby's soul may reach to heaven, else they wont have another child in future. For every dead or aborted child parents must offer a mass.

If a dead body is found in the drain the first responsibility of the public in general and the police in particular is to cover the body with any clean cloth followed by collecting evidence from the spot. Then shift the body to the nearest hospital for forensic investigation and postmortem. It is strange that the police are trying to measure the length of the body at the drain itself which is very unusual.
