Karkala, Jul 8: Dangerous roadside trees were removed here by forest department with help from the locals on Friday July 7.
It may be recalled Pilar resident Praveen (30) died as a tree fell on him on Thursday night. The tree fell on him on Belman market Padubidri state highway 1. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he died on the way. The state highway was closed after the incident. Locals removed the tree and allowed vehicles to pass by a side of the road that night.
Two riders who arrived in a scooter had parked their vehicle on the roadside and gone to the nearby hotel a little earlier to the incident. The scooter was mangled after the tree landed on it. An auto-rickshaw had passed before the bike which Praveen was riding. The auto-rickshaw and the scooter riders had a miraculous escape. As the locals alerted Mescom about the snapped live cable that was on the road, further danger was averted. A sugarcane juice shop, fancy shop and general store were damaged in the mishap.
An old dangerous tree at Belman bus stand was also axed together with the tree that fell on the road. Locals helped to vacate the tree using two cranes and a backhoe.
