Bellary, Jul 31: Following the Supreme Court order to put on hold all mining activities in the Bellary region, the administration decided to crack the whip on violaters and seized 49 trucks carrying iron ore illegally.
The incident was reported from Allipura on the outskirts of Bellary on Saturday July 30. The total value of the seized ore is yet to be ascertained, but it is well over crores.
The trucks, belonging to Srinivas Reddy of Bellary Mining Corporation, though they did have permit, were not allowed to pass as per the SC order which suspended all mining activities, including those with permits.
The drivers of the trucks fled the scene.
On Friday July 29, the Supreme Court had passed an order to suspend all mining activities in the region with immediate effect, citing environmental damage as the reason. It had also asked the environment ministry to furnish a report on the extent of mining carried out in the region within a week.
The operation was led by deputy commissioner Aditya Biswas and the district police.
