Mangaluru, Sep 7: Teacher, clinician and researcher Sr Jacintha D'Souza was conferred with the state level teacher’s award on the occasion of Teacher’s Day.
Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka organised Teacher’s Day celebration on September 5. On this occasion, eight eminent teachers including Sr Jacintha, who served in the field of health sciences were honoured.
Sr Jacintha has served in the field of nursing and education for around three decades. She was not only a teacher but also a clinician, administrator and researcher. Being a simple and humble leader, she has defined discipline as the central theme of tutoring and guiding nursing professionals.
She completed her BSc nursing from Bangalore University in 1989 and secured the first rank. In 1994, she completed her MSc nursing at Father Muller College of Nursing under Mangalore University. She has also obtained MPhil. Nursing from MAHE, Manipal Deemed University in 2001 and secured first rank in the first year.
She started her career as a clinical instructor at Father Muller School of Nursing, Mangaluru. Later, she was promoted to the post of professor and principal at Father Muller College of Nursing till 2011. She has also helped to set up other institutions such as St Ann’s College of Nursing and Athena College of Nursing.
She has presented many papers in national and international journals, where the topics ranging from nursing care to utilisation of information and communication technology to augment nursing care are discussed. She has published many reference resources in the form of books and dictionaries for nursing students. She has organised many seminars and conferences for nursing professionals and also conducted workshops for uplifting nursing education.
Recognising her academic brilliance, she has been nominated as a member of Board of Studies in Nursing at both UG and PG levels at the RGUHS, Yenepoya and Nitte Universities and also academic committee member of RGUHS. She has been on the inspection committees of INC, NAAC and UGC. She was also an assistant editor of RGUHS Journal of Nursing Science. The National Press Council of India honoured her with the prestigious National Teachers Award in 2022.
Recognising her immense contribution in the field of nursing education, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka honoured her as an eminent teacher on the occasion of Teacher’s day celebration organised in the presence of minister of medical education and skill development, government of Karnataka and pro chancellor of the university, Dr Sharanprakash R Patil.
