Mangaluru/Udupi, Sep 7: Anupam Agrawal took charge as the Mangaluru police commissioner on Thursday September 7.
Anupam Agarwal who took over charge as new police commissioner of Mangaluru said that his priority will be to realize the dream of a ‘drug-free’ Mangaluru.
Speaking to mediapersons, he said, “I have heard about drug problem while working in other districts. Former police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar too has done excellent work in this connection. The drug free campaign appears to be successful. I will assure that I will continue the campaign with other officers to make drug free Mangaluru a reality,” he said.
“Another sensitive subject for Karnataka police is moral policing. I know that the issue is acute here. The police department has already taken actions and we will show the real face of law against those who indulge in moral policing by stringent action. We will be taking strict action against those who spoil communal harmony.
“Swift legal action will be taken against those who indulge in moral policing and those who support them. Delay in action encourages the accused. Therefore we will not be giving room for it. Mangaluru is identified as important and sensitive area in the state. Therefore, we will have to work harder while working here. Now that I have got an opportunity to work, the people-friendly police system along with beat arrangement will be strengthened. People will be encouraged to bring directly or indirectly the issues to our notice. Along with regular policing, an eye will be kept on gambling and petty criminal activities. The former commissioner had responded to the problems of people holding phone-in programme including traffic issues. Such people-friendly programmes will be continued,” he said.
Outgoing police commissioner Kuldeep Kumar Jain said that he has performed his duties according to his capacity without pressure. “I have received support from my subordinate officers, team and people. I had to maintain the trust bestowed by people on me within a short span of time. I am glad that I did it. The service for people for which I arrived has reached them. If it has pleased them, our encouragement is doubled,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Arun K took charge as superintendent of police (SP) of Udupi district on Thursday.
The outgoing SP Akshay Machhindra handed over the charges by handing over the baton to the new SP.
Speaking to media, Dr Arun K said, "Illegal activities will be dealt by with stringent action. No moral policing will be allowed. My priority is for people-friendly policing. Public issues will be attended in a professional manner. I will ensure to continue the good practices initiated by the earlier SP. Curb on drugs is the priority of the state government. We will work accordingly.”
