Mangaluru/Udupi, Sep 10: A Rashtriya Lok Adalat was convened on Saturday within the premises of taluk and district courts, organized under the patronage of the National Legal Services Authority, State Legal Services Authority, and District Legal Services Authority.

A total of 48 sessions were conducted, addressing 21,763 cases. Impressively, 14,840 cases were successfully resolved through compromise, resulting in the distribution of Rs 17,97,64,778 as compensation.

The Lok Adalat provided a platform to resolve pre-litigation cases, crimes that could be settled through compromise, cases related to checks, bank fraud, motor vehicle accidents, as well as civil and property disputes without charging any fees.

Universal Sompo General Insurance Company took a noteworthy step by agreeing to pay Rs 91 lakhs in compensation through compromise to the family of an employee from the City Municipality of Udupi who lost his life in a road accident in January 2021. Lawyer H. Ananda Madiwala highlighted that this was the first instance in Lok Adalat where an insurance company consented to pay such a substantial amount in compensation through compromise.

In a heartwarming incident, a 64-year-old man and his 52-year-old wife, who had been separated due to irreconcilable differences, were reunited with the assistance of a judge and a lawyer. The couple has a 17-year-old son and a 21-year-old daughter. They had filed for divorce in 2021, with the court mandating the husband to provide Rs 10,000 per month in alimony. However, they continued to live apart. Three months ago, when the wife fell ill, the husband and their children moved in to care for her. Consequently, the elderly couple decided to reunite during the Lok Adalat proceedings.
