Udupi, Sep 12: Vehicles by the name of Swachh Vahini are functioning in a systematic manner in Udupi identified as a role model for collection of dry and wet waste and its disposal in scientific manner in the state. Vehicle proceeded to Kodibengre village from Kodi gram panchayat, Brahmavar taluk and collected dry waste with special efforts to make it a clean village at all times.
The vehicles had to cover a distance of 35 kilometres. As it causes loss to SLRM staff and vehicles of the panchayat, the villagers were made aware to clear dry waste at its origin and it was done once in 15 days.
As barge service has started to Kodibengre, the dry waste is being collected like in other villages regularly. Nearly one tonne of dry waste is being collected per week. The driver and the staff go to the spots in the barge for collection of waste showing that the SLRM unit staff is ready to collect trash regardless of the conditions.
There are more than 300 houses in Kodibengre. The trash is being collected once in a week instead of once in a fortnight because of the distance of 35 kilometres. The distance to be covered by barge is only ten kilometres. Hundred per cent of the garbage fee is being collected in the panchayat limits. The SLRM unit is self-sufficient in the amount and does not seek money from the panchayat for the fuel cost of the vehicle and payment to the staff, said Ravindra, panchayat development officer of Kodi gram panchayat.
