Bangalore: CM Orders Cancellation of 'La Tomatina' Fest

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Sep 16: Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda has ordered cancellation of ‘La Tomatina’ fest scheduled to be organized at Bangalore Palace Grounds on September 18 and also at Mysore.

The Chief Minister has directed the Police Commissioners of Bangalore and Mysore to take appropriate steps to ensure that the cancellation order was strictly enforced.

Representatives of Kolar district tomato growers, environmentalists and few NGOs, who called on the Chief Minister in Bangalore on Friday, appraised him that, ''Tomatoes grown by farmers with huge effort is wasted by throwing on each other which represents Western Culture."

''In the name of organising 'La Tomatina’ fest, tomatoes should not be allowed to go waste," they demanded.

The delegation led by Jayanagar BJP ML B N Vijayakumar impressed upon the Chief Minister that a minimum 5,000 people were expected to participate in this fest. ''If 80-100 tomotoes are thrown by each individual 5 lac tomatoes go waste. Nearly 60,000 kgs. Tomatoes will be destroyed for the entertainment of the affluent," they said.

Responding ito the request, the Chief Minister directed the Police Commissioners of both the cities to take appropriate action.

DVS Urges Centre to Withdraw Hike in Petrol Prices

The Chief Minister urged the Congress-led UPA regime to take immediate steps to withdraw the latest steep hike in petrol prices as it will affect the common man and demanded that the Centre should not resort to increase in the prices again and again.

He also told reporters, who met him this morning at the Home Office Krishna, that he will examine reduction of sales tax imposed on Petroleum Products by the State Government.

Gowda also announced that he will be touring Koppal and campaign for the ruling BJP for two or three days after September 20. ''I will participate in the campaign as an ordinary worker and visit all the villages to campaign for the BJP candidate Karadi Sanganna," he said.

Govt to Give More Encouragement to Sports

The State Government will give more importance to sports and give priority to building sports facility and infrastructure along with training the sports persons.

The Chief Minister made the announcement during his interaction with trainees and employees working in Karnataka Sports Authority, who met him and requested new Pay Scales and C&R Rules for Karnataka Sports Authority.

Gowda said sports trainers were given as much importance as sports persons. Stadiums were being constructed in all districts. The trainers are responsible for creating excellent sporting talent. The revision of their salaries will be considered, he said promising talk to the officers in this regard.

A cash reward of Rs5 lac each has been sanctioned to four Hockey players who represented the State in the Indian Team which won the Asian Hockey Trophy recently.

Vikas Gowda, who is representing India in 2012 London Olympics, will be given Rs 50 lacs in the first installment for his training. All this is done to encourage sports in the State, the Chief Minister said.

It was good decision to stop the event. We are not yet ready for such events in India, especially when farmers are still suiciding and there are lot of starving citizens in India.

I wonder whose idea it was to conduct such an event He or She must be filthy rich and found out a way to become popular.

in this context, I agree with Mr. Bhat and appreciate CM's gesture. India has no right to waste food where millions especially children are starving and malrnourised. It is okay for a Country like Spain, which is having sufficient food to feed its people. But still food should be respected and not wasted.

If wastage is the issue, the CM should also ban the Mahamastabisheka and Maha Yagnas where truckloads of milk, honey, ghee, turmaric and other food items are wasted just to get some spiritual pleasure while kids next door are hungry and malnurished.

I doubt any tomato grower wanted to ban this feast. If he does, he must be educated in common sense of basic demand and supply economics.

In the western countries, several million tonnes of excess food is dumped into the sea in order to maintain fair market price for the farmers. I have seen on the TV truck loads of milk poured into the river in order to balance the demand and supply as well as to support fair market price for the ranchers.

If there is any shortage of tomatoes, I agree with CM's decision. Otherwise, his decision is politically biased.

The cancellation is welcome. I am glad that now our CM ( or that team visited CM) is going to distribute 60,000 kgs of tomatoes to the poor and needy to feed them. I am also glad to know our cm has so much of concern of wastage of food in our state. I heard now lots of crores of money wasted on some celebrations. our kind CM can redirect that money to the poor and needy. It feed lakhs of people. I also heard the intellectuals of Karnataka have decided to stop sammelanas to redirect that money to poor and needy. Our CM is going to visit and inspect Govt run warehouses to check how much food is being wasted there. Excellent work by all the intellectuals. Congrats.

If you are very much concerned food wastages from such functions please advise the organisor of the respective functions to take care of such things and not our CM. Also please dont blame CM if you have any personal problem also. Try to resolve by yourself. Also learn to appreciate good things done by others and not on the basis of political parties to whom you support.

Instead of having the Tomatoe fest now lets have it in April - May. The tomatoe prices hit Rock bottom during this period and the same farmers throw them to drains or road as it doesn't fetch them money. atleast by having it in the month of April May atleast these farmers can get some value for their product...

Very good explanation. Our people will just blame the western culture... that's what they know. As I once saw on a TV interview in India between youngsters and old people, the young generation was saying that because the Britishers came to India, we developed this much. Or else, our males would have still worn dhothi and females would have been wearing the sari. But, the old men said that the Brittishers took everything from our country.

I appreciate your strong decision CM and strictly enforce this. Don't let the tomatoes go waste at any cost.

LA TOMATINA FEST IS NOT WESTERN CULTURE, good job CM
In 1945, during a parade of gigantes y cabezudos, young men who wanted to participate in the event staged a brawl. Since there was a vegetable stand nearby, they picked up tomatoes and used them as weapons. The police had to intervene to break up the fight, and forced those responsible to pay the damages incurred.
The following year the young people repeated the fight, only this time they brought their own tomatoes from home. They were again dispersed by the police. After repeating this in subsequent years, the party was, albeit unofficially, established.
At around 10 AM, festivities begin with the first event of the Tomatina. It is the "palo jabón", similar to the greasy pole. The goal is to climb a greased pole with a ham on top. As this happens, the crowd work into a frenzy of singing and dancing while being showered in water from hoses. Once someone is able to the ham off the pole, the start signal for the tomato fight is given. The signal for the onset is at about 11 when a loud shot rings out, and the chaos begins.
Several trucks throw tomatoes in abundance in the Plaza del Pueblo. The tomatoes come from extremadura, where they are less expensive and are grown specifically for the holidays, being of inferior taste. [1] For the participants the use of goggles and gloves are recommended. The tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown so as to reduce the risk of injury.
After exactly one hour, the fight ends.

It is surprising that tomato growers are against this festival... It is none of their business how the tomatoes are used once bought from them paying the required price.. It is sad that tomatoes are wasted in such a manner...we do such stupid things in many ways in our life... we burst crackers, we immerse Ganesha Idol into water...we make Abhisheka with milk, ghee, honey etc....we waste food in our functions..etc etc.
