Leopard Skins, Bear Gall Bladder Seized in Uttarakhand

New Delhi, Sep 30 (IANS): Two leopard skins, the gall bladder of a Himalayan black bear and other animal derivatives were seized by authorities in Uttarakhand, an NGO said Friday.

Uttarakhand Police made the seizures Thursday with help from the NGO Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI).

In Dehradun, one leopard skin was seized and two people were arrested. Two more leopard skins, a gall bladder of a Himalayan black bear, the musk pod of a musk deer, and other items were seized in Sukhi Dhang. One person has been arrested in this case, the NGO said in a statement.

Leopard, musk deer and the Himalayan black bear are protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, the country's highest protection given to wild animals.

A total of 136 cases of leopard poaching were reported in India this year, of which 51 cases were recorded in Uttarakhand. Last year, 180 cases were reported in the country.

In the eleventh year of it's existence, Uttarakhand continues to reel under dismal governance. There is total crisis of leadership with the sixth Chief Minister in so many years. The very concept & idea of having a hill state has lost it's relevance.People in the Hill Sector live in abject penury while the statistics boast of an impressive per capita income.Jungles are being denuded with conniavance with people who are employed to safeguard them.Recent cases of Jageshwar & Bhawani Devi are cases in point. The habitat of our fauna is shrinking day by day.So called Eco Resorts are being constructed with alarming regularity allover.Where do the Tigers & Panthers go ?

Imagine there is just no survey & accounting of Panthers in Uttarakhand.Mass scale poaching is rampant especially in the Indo-Nepal belt from where the skins, bones & other parts of these cats find an easy access into Nepal & then to China. The wild life authorities do just lip service & publish data & stats that suits them. There are no tranquilizing guns at District levels. The so called shooters do not know the quantity of medicine to be put in the darts. There is no breeding policy & if it is, it is only restricted to papers.

There is no gridded veterinary cover. In all, things reflect a sad spectacle. No Wild Life Act will do anything, if you have NO implementation. What have we come to ?I appeal to the 'powers that be' & Wild Life Authorities to take these dastardly happenings as warning signals & very, very seriously.
