At Just Rs 2,250, India Launches World's Cheapest Tablet PC

Daijiworld Media Network

New Delhi, Oct 6: The education system in India has taken a quantum leap with the introduction of world's cheapest tablet computer, which will be used by lacs of students across the country.

The device, named Akash was launched here on Wednesday October 5, by Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal who said that the device will be made available at a cost of Rs 2,250, which makes it the cheapest in the world.

For students pursuing higher education, Akash tablet will be subsidised and offered at a price of Rs 1,125.

Akash has been developed jointly by the students of IIT Rajasthan and DataWind Ltd.

Sibal said that the government plans to bring down the cost further to Rs 490 in the coming months by increasing the volume of production.

"Akash is a milestone in history. It will bring paradigm shift in education delivery," said Sibal, adding: "The device is not only for Indian students but for those of the world."

The low-cost device would allow students in the rural areas access technology which was hitherto not possible.

"People said it can't be done in India and by the Indians. We accepted the challenge," said DataWind chief executive officer Suneet Singh Tuli.

The tablet is packed with  with a seven-inch Android 2.2 touch screen, Wi-Fi, two USB ports and an Ebook reader for access to online streaming course material and web-based research. It is powered with 256MB of RAM, 2GB flash storage, and a 366MHz processor.

Sibal said the challenge for IT experts was now to generate world class content also. He appealed to the hardware industry to come forward and partner the government in manufacturing the low cost device.

IANS Adds:

Akash tablet's commercial variant in November

The manufacturer of Akash, the world's cheapest tablet computing device priced at Rs.2,250, DataWind Wednesday said it plans to launch the tablet's commercial variant in the country by November-end.

"We plan to launch the commercial variant of the device somewhere in late-November," Suneet Singh Tuli, chief executive of DataWind, told IANS on the sidelines of the tablet launch for students by Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Kapil Sibal.

According to Tuli, the price of the commercial variant would be higher than that of the students' version, but did not divulge any details.

"It would be a bit higher, but very competitive to anything that is available around the world," Tuli said.

The company expects to have a customer base of nearly 100,000 customers per month for the commercial variant of the tablet.

"I am hoping for nearly 100,000 customers per month for my tab which may be priced around Rs.2,500-3,000."

Tuli further said the company's manufacturing facility capacity in Hyderabad would be increased from the current 700 units per day to nearly 100,000 units per month.

"We have to eventually increase the capacity to 100,000 units in the coming time to meet the demand."

The company was also scouting for an alternative manufacturing site to increase production.

"Our basic plan is to provide the 'tab' to the Indian market first, but the demand is so high that we need to develop a new facility altogether and we are scouting for a location."

Replying to the enormous export potential estimates which were given by Sibal, who said the product was not just for 220 million Indian students but also for the rest of the world, Tuli said: "No doubt it's a great product. But our first priority is to provide it in India and then the rest of the world."

Further, the company expressed its hopes for a new tab with a price tag of about $10, with the help of more local components.

"We need to have more local components. And with the production expansion that we plan, we believe that Indian component manufacturers would soon see the opportunity, thus reducing our prices."

Currently, the tab uses around 35 percent component from South Korea, 25 percent from China, 16 from the US, 16 from India and rest from around the world.

Meanwhile, senior company officials told IANS that the base version of the device for students will come in partnership with telecommunication service provider Aircel which would provide SIM cards which can then be used for accessing the internet through the 3G network.

"We have tied-up with Aircel for the product. They will provide the network to access the 3G-internet service."

  • Maurice D, Toronto

    Fri, Oct 07 2011

    Toronto Star Reports:
Two Indian-born Canadian immigrants are behind the world’s cheapest tablet computer.

On Wednesday, Indian Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal introduced the device, developed by DataWind, a Montreal firm founded by brothers Raja and Suneet Singh Tuli.

DataWind CEO Suneet Singh Tuli expects to sell 1 million tablets per month once the Android-powered device goes on sale to the general public later this year.

The first run of 100,000 Aakash tablets (meaning “sky” in Hindi and Gujarati) has been purchased by the Indian government for $48 each. They will be resold to university students for $25.

Tuli explained that the government would like to buy 8 to 10 million units from four or five suppliers.

“We bid so aggressively that the other bidders weren’t able to match our price,” Tuli says. The bidding is being reopened for the next batch of orders.

India’s National Mission on Education through Information & Communication Technology has spent five years pushing for an inexpensive mobile device for mass use.

The Aakash runs the Android 2.2 operating system, features a 7-inch display with 800-by-480 pixel resolution, two USB ports and a claimed battery life of 3 hours. It also comes with 256 megabytes of RAM, 2 gigabytes of flash storage and a 366 MHz processor made by Connexant.

This is enough to perform standard tasks, such as streaming HD video, reading Ebooks and running office-suite applications.

Web access is via DataWind’s proprietary.

For any revolutionary product to become a reality, somebody has to have a vision and the authority to demand it from the developers/researchers. Truly, I hate politicians, but what Kapil Sibal has achieved with respect to the cheapest tablet, is worth the praise. He has pushed our esteemed instutions and entrepreneurs to come out with a product that will reach the milloins of poor and otherwise unfortunate students. Good job Mr Sibal, IITians from Rajasthan and Mr Suneet Singh. Well done

CWG had burned our hands- but look at the facilities now Delhi-ites enjoy-Broad roads, better mass transport, state of the art stadiums, metro trains which will make any Indian proud, Aiports with all modern amenities.
If we see there are more Positives in a few Negatives(as Brahmakumaris always give discourse-highlighting positives in every negatives we come across). It depends which party u belong to-To say(or feel) the Glass is Half Full or Half Empty!

Good work by Kapil Sibil and this is a great achievement as he promised earlier. While the tablet looks quite attractive from the price point, we have our own doubts about its public acceptance. Only having a digital device isn’t going to add value to learning. The Government needs to support it with infrastructure and Wi-Fi is still a distant dream for many places in India. I hope it is not going to be a toy and turn out in to a big scam. Anybody know how much money pumped in to this project?.

Hi Why you compare food and oil prices when Sibal is offering something good for the poor students. 80% Indian population never pay taxes and you expect to run the show without taxes?.There has to be taxes on oil and petrol or else how the government can run the activities. Why don't you blame the public who always avoid filing tax returns. People expect water and electricity at a low price.Everything has a price and you pay tax for it.What about money spent by the government on the population which never pay taxes. You simply blame the UPA because the fuel prices are high.I think you need to gather information before you comment.
The price is same compared to similar product by china which is available plenty in china market.Only difference here we have name akash but they sell as copies of other existing brands..
