Udupi, May 5: A crack has been observed near the retaining wall at the sunset spot on Agumbe Ghat. There are concerns that the wall might collapse due to the passage of heavy vehicles, potentially leading to the closure of the ghat for traffic.
Near the 14th bend of the ghat, if vehicles veer too far to the left, there is a risk of the retaining wall collapsing entirely. Despite this risk, heavy vehicles continue to traverse the ghat, exacerbating the situation. Previous collisions involving heavy vehicles have weakened the retaining walls over time.
With schools currently on summer vacation, the traffic density on the ghat section has increased. If the crack in the retaining wall is not addressed promptly, there is a heightened risk of collapse during the monsoon season. Neglected repairs in the past have contributed to the overall weakening of the ghat section.
Residents of Shivamogga, Chikkamagalur, and nearby areas rely on KMC Manipal Hospital for medical care, with Agumbe Ghat serving as a vital link. The public is urging the district administration to take swift action to repair the crack.
Furthermore, the presence of large trees on either side of the ghat has resulted in branches encroaching onto the road, posing a hazard to motorists. These overhanging branches need to be pruned to ensure safe passage. Additionally, the absence of stormwater drainage along the ghat impedes the flow of rainwater, further complicating traffic movement.
Many motorists opt to use air conditioning while driving through the ghat section, which may hinder their ability to hear approaching vehicles' horns, increasing the risk of collisions and traffic blockages. It is advisable for all drivers to refrain from using air conditioning and keep their windows open while navigating Agumbe Ghat for enhanced safety.
