Mangaluru, May 16: The Delhi High Court has granted bail to Ammar Abdul Rehman, grandson of former Ullal MLA late Idinabba. The court ruled that possessing an ISIS flag and pamphlet on one's mobile does not automatically classify a person as a terrorist.
Ammar was arrested by the National Investigating Agency (NIA) under the UAPA Act on August 21, 2021. He appealed his arrest in the high court, which granted bail after a lengthy hearing.
The court noted that mere attraction to a terrorist organization does not constitute terrorism. Listening to speeches in favor of ISIS does not fall under sections 38 and 39 of the UAPA Act. Although ISIS flags and parts of Laden’s speeches were found on Ammar's mobile, the court stated that this does not make him a member of ISIS, as such content is readily available online.
The NIA has submitted a charge sheet against several individuals in connection with the case. Deepti Marla, the daughter-in-law of late MLA Idinabba, was arrested on January 4 following Ammar's arrest. Deepti Marla, who converted to Islam after marrying Anas Abdul, was allegedly working for ISIS under Ammar's direction.
The NIA registered a suo moto FIR in Delhi on March 5, 2021. While Ammar Abdul Rehman has been released on bail due to insufficient evidence, Deepti Marla remains in NIA custody.
