Moodbidri: Suicide Cases Continue to Haunt: Three More End Lives

Daijiworld Media Network – Moodbidri (SP)

Moodbidri, Oct 20: The spate of suicides in the region is increasing by the day. It is a matter of concern that young lives are lost even before they reach the prime of youth, and most of the time over silly issues, at least on the face of it. Wednesday October 19 was a dark day for this region, as not one but three cases of suicide were reported.

Two teenagers committed suicide ostensibly for trivial reasons, while a middle-aged man ended his life because of financial crisis.

Prathvi (17), a pre university student of a college here, committed suicide at her hostel room on Wednesday. Mid-term examinations are being held in the college, and exact reasons for the girl’s decision to end her life could not be ascertained.

Sandhya (18), daughter of Venkataraya Acharya from Beluvai Nanilpadavu ended her life on Wednesday. It is said that she had expressed her desire to join a computer course, but the family members had put off her request by citing financial commitments connected with the recently solemnised marriage of her elder sister. It is said that she was aggrieved over the denial of her proposal to pursue computer education.

Srinath Shetty (43), son of Seetaram Shetty from Puttige Somanathabettu, committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his home late night on Tuesday. It is said that he was into chit business and financial crisis forced him to take this drastic decision.

I am concerned more about the first case, as it is very obvious in this so called moderncompetent world. The sole reason for many of such cases is either 'pressurized minds' or over sensitivity. Latter is innate but the former is a direct cause of our educational flaws and the stereotypical thought of "no life without getting into either engineering or medical fields". When this changes 50% of teen suicides will reduce. Parents and elders must allow their children to choose the careers of their interest. With our guidance and support, they can conquer the unconquered.

Every School or College should have a qualified full-time Counselor whose role should be constantly to over see and advise the students on various social issues, and also to identify each and every student`s potential, intelligence and the particular line of interest, and accordingly guide them to further studies and courses, so that the students pursue their further career in the line of their liking and capability. In many of the cases, because of the pressure from their parents and relatives, presently, the students are forced to take up studies and/or courses (like IT, Engineering and Medicine) which are totally outside their line of interest and grasping capacity, and when the pressure of studies becomes too much, they are unable to cope up, and so, sadly resort to these extreme measures. It is time, the parents also should change their conventional norms and thinking, and be more realistic and adaptable to the prevailing modern situation, and allow their children to embark upon the career path suited to them.

All colleges should must make it compulsory that students should participate in any of extracurricular activities, this will reduce stress / loneliness & students will have no time to think about suicide.

RIP to all the three souls who decided it was not worth living.

Karnataka has taken the dubious honor of being the suicide capital of India. Loss of family bonding/communication, greed, crass materialism, competition, advent of hi-tech gizmos, propagation of nonstop negativity in the media, and mainly loss of ability to be patient are the main reasons for the increase in suicides!!

Parents are so much stressed, that they do not have the patience to calmly say "no" to kids and make them understand, if they cannot afford to provide what the child wants. Unintentionally, the child feels neglected and hurt. They sometimes get a feeling that the other sibling is always given preference over him/her. When such situations repeat, children tend to take extreme steps.

I myself as a student felt many times to leave home and go. Luckily by the grace of god, better sense prevailed.

If todays youth understand how much difficulties & pain their parents have suffered to brought them up, surely they do not go for suicide. I expect all parents to be more of friends to their childrens then guardians.

setting up of proper counselling facilities in every college would reduce these sort of suicides, if not fully but atleast would be up to an extent of nearly 80%. any ways may their soul RIP.

My Heartfelt condolences and sympathy to their families.

There might b thousands of reasons and doubts behind these suicides, which might b very silly.

TV serials, crime stories, internet etc etc r attracting youngsters to turn emotional. now a days, all parent r trying to educate their childeren as much as possible even though if they r in debt.

Need to be very careful with their childrens, a small no from thier dear ones will end into a trajedy.

Parents should be the real councellers at home. Everybody has thier own difficulty, whether financial or non financial. handling the situation smartely will lead us all into more brighter days

It is a disturbing trend which should addressed be immediately. Parents at home and their teachers at school should try to identify such cases in the early stages, and give them appropiate medical atttention/guidance in time. Only then these incidences can be eliminted.
